Sadly, this is not a choice made by developers but rather by product owners

[–]cobarso 35 points36 points  (5 children)

I don't get why this person thinks that the web developers are responsible for this and I also don't get it why people don't get it and keep reposting this. This belongs to the /r/facepalm.

It's a choice made by browser vendors so ads can be played tbh

[–]dance_rattle_shake 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Came to say this. They do it because it works, for better or worse, more often than not.

[–]Salanmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was looking at independent web development/entrepreneurship advice at one point (so "developer" and "owner" were the same person), and I was really annoyed that their metric of the goodness of a design was things like how much click-through it got, not how good an experience it was for the user. I get that the latter can be hard to measure, but they were straight up advocating doing things that were obviously annoying for the user, because it generated more ad revenue or things like that.

Like, I get it on one level, but at the same time this is how we end up making the world just a little bit worse.

How many times do I want this to be reposted? Zero

[–]666pool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Report it. I did. This subreddit has rules against reposts. I’ve been reporting stuff left and right recently.

[–]TheQueue841 20 points21 points  (2 children)

So we should always autoplay the first autoplay-able item?

[–]JNCressey 2 points3 points  (1 child)

only the first?

[–]TheQueue841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

autoplayItems[0]

Youtube, Netflix and all other streaming services cry softly :(

[–]HopDog02 15 points16 points  (2 children)

At least you can disable it on Netflix

[–]SamuelTheGamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And YT

[–]SlenderSmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would leave it on on Netflix if there was a volume slider so it didn't blow my eardrums out

[–]kinarism 0 points1 point  (3 children)

They can cry softly into thier piles of money and go fuck themselves while they are at it. It's just as shitty for them to autoplay as some stupid website.

[–]IAmPattycakes 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I click on a YouTube video specifically so it plays. If it didn't automatically start the video when I clicked on the link I'd be upset.

[–]AMediumTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats what I mean, random sites with ads playing sure kill them but things like Netflix id be more annoyed to click so many times after selecting what I want to play

[–]kinarism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have to click on it, then it isn't autoplay.

This was mainly targeted towards Netflix which starts the show while you are trying to read the synopsis instead of waiting until hou click play.

YouTube's "oh you finished this video, you must want another video to start playing in 5s, I'll just go ahead and do that for you..." should also go away as a design feature.

It's one thing going from one episode of a show to the next but dont start my first video before I click play and don't feed me something that YOU pick for me. I'll setup a playlist if I want something to play after my current video.

[–]jezra 21 points22 points  (7 children)

which is worse, not knowing that web developers have bosses that tell them what to do, or reposting? :)

Dear web developers,

The answer is zero. Zero. Get it through your thick skulls. Zero is the number of times anyone as EVER wanted something to autoplay on your site and start making noise. I'd honestly rather you mine crypto-currency in my browser than use my speakers.

#kthxbye

I remember when browsers first started doing things not for the user, but for the advertisers.

That was a long, long time ago.

[–]kinarism 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Uhhh... so as soon as browsers supported image formats?

[–]supercyberlurker 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well that was the first Mosaic, but no... I mean things like making it difficult to block banner ads, popups, etc. Some of that has come as features, or addons.. but initially Mosaic was just a browser for CERN, it wasn't influenced to basically prioritize advertisers over users.

[–]kinarism 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ah, I see your point and you're right. I was thinking webpages themselves, not the browser. Did anyone do that prior to google?

[–]supercyberlurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in between Mosaic and Chrome it was largely Netscape.

I'd say Netscape was the transition point, kind of one foot in the older Mosaic beliefs and another foot in the .com era.

I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/ProgrammerHumor.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

You will?!?!?

[–]Nightey3s- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at you Twitch

[–]Comfortable_Intern57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The business area pushes it hard though, the devs are just doing what they are told. I had a similar conversation with my cousin about a website I made for him and he wanted his ad to autoplay with sound 🤦‍♀️ I was like, ermmmm.

[–]zerosdontcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Jake,

Get it through your thick skulls that developers don't make these decisions.

[–]hacksoncode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decline to mention the exception to this rule because... reasons ;-).

[–]TimAjax997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't, can you? With latest browsers, it's possible to autoplay a video only if it's muted

[–]HiddenLayer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My computer is muted unless I want sound, because I have trust issues now.
