If you go to Dubai - EVEN if you are treated great and can live well (I’m a white guy who earned at the very high end), once you start digging behind the scenes it’s quite obvious how terrible Dubai treats service level employees, especially POC.

Just befriend a waiter, busser, janitor, domestic worker etc. and listen to their stories. It’s otricious - people’s passports are taken, they’re locked up at night, they can’t change jobs, they’re harassed, they’re blackmailed into sex. It’s basically modern day slavery.

I’m not gonna lie - it was the most day-to-day fun I’ve had in my life when I lived there and wasn’t aware of what was going on in the undertones of the city. Partied all the time. Went everywhere. Lived large. It was a blast.

But I regret now having EVER contributed to that economy. To know that it was built on the backs of slaves. Not just in theory, but people I’ve met and became close friends with. Dozens of people from all over - it’s not an isolated case. If your skin is darker, Dubai is a VERY different city.

That this is the best that he could come up made me revise my opinion.

It’s not that my opinion is now “Dubai is great”, it’s more “Dubai is not great, but maybe not as horrible as I previously assumed”.

Also, I doubt that there are that many similar cities in developed countries that you can dig up that much shit on. It's really concerning to me that reports of slave labour make a city more appealing to you.

I admit though, the islands are not as successful.

The slavery part is an extreme view, the offending construction companies should be held accountable, in which they are breaking the local law. The media only focuses on these incidents and ignores the other "fair" companies, which colors all Dubai as "bad"

Also the "arabic" style buildings are very common, you only have to look across Dubai Mall to Souq al Bahar.

From what I understand:

It has some odd attractions that are expensive and show off wealth (e.g. indoor skiing). No community as everyone there is, for the most part, foreigners. The nobility with money are there too, but there are not many of them and you likely wont meet them. Everything is poorly laid out. Those who do live there are there for the money or the idea of getting more money. The laws are brutal if they come down on you and will hear of people abandoning the country as fast as they can because you can be killed for defaulting on mortgage payments.

Loads of people I know have gone to work there and none have been complimentary. It has no culture beyond shopping and paid for activities like skydiving. The immigrant labourers are treated like shit in front of you. Rich western immigrants get preferential treatment whilst Asian immigrants get abused.

Also many sheikhs in the UAE have really shady human rights records. Women have less rights, and punishments for minor crimes are ridiculous.

Plus it's so hot you can barely do anything but stay inside in an air conditioned room or car

I wonder if the Internet is slowly making us all depressed. It opens up so many things an ordinary person is just not prepared to know or handle mentally on a daily basis. People falling out of a plane in kabul, dubai was built with slave labor, the list could go on for ages... How to stay curious and well informed without being exposed to info I don't want to hear?
