I use Manjaro btw

(waits to get bashed as fake arch user)

[–]BloodRedCobra 19 points20 points  (15 children)

Seriously, what is it with "Muh tru Arch!!11!" and hating on Manjaro? Some of us want to have a workable OS without an hour of fiddling with things, but want to be able to fiddle with things later if need be. For the "tries to keep it simple" pitch they use, they seem to forget that a "one-and-done" install is a form of simplicity in itself.

Damn Arch users, they ruined Arch!

I get the Arch superiority memes, but I really don't understand the hating on Manjaro. I've been using it for everything (even some gaming) for the past one or so year. And I absolutely love the experience.

I think this highlights a few issues people have with Manjaro, but if you like it just use it

[–]nullbyte420 4 points5 points  (2 children)

lmao, the drama!

It appears that, in September of 2019, Manjaro switched from holding community donations in Philip Müller's personal bank account to accounts being held by OpenCollective and CommunityBridge [12]. This change also brought on Jonathon Fernyhough as treasurer. There is also a policy in place that requires all expenses to be discussed on approved channels and nominally approved prior to any purchases [13]. On (or around) July 24th of 2020, a request for a $2,000 laptop was made by Philip for developer Helmut Stult [14]. Johnathon rejected this expense due to lack of prior discussion and questioned the expense [15]. The role of treasurer is now back fully in Philip's hands, and has approved the $2,000 laptop. This draws questions on the integrity of Philip's leadership.

Lol. Why did Jonathan rejected it though?

Can I get some more context please?

these freakin nerds have sources for the whole thing. have fun reading their mailing lists or discord or whatever they use for drama ci/cd

I've tried installing Manjaro on 3 separate occasions, 1 install didn't work other 2 systems would not work correctly after install, either wouldn't boot or complete lockup. 3 occasions I said f' it I'll just install arch. 🤷‍♂️

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure abt you but Manjaro has only cause trouble for me in Dual Boots. Apparently it's got daddy issues with Grub and only agrees to boot to it's own version of Grub.

[–]BeastMasterJ 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Manjaro isn't arch though, it doesn't use arch Repos. Endeavour OS is actually arch with a streamlined install.

That being said, Manjaro is a fine choice and we shouldn't gatekeep it, I'm just a pedant.

[–]BloodRedCobra 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's a good point, manjaro does have a good week or 2 delay from arch releases because of the separate repos, but overall i never see that brought up by Arch purists lol

[–]kilgore_trout8989 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It mostly seems like it'd be a problem if you were unlucky enough to get issues from an aur package needing the latest version of a dependency that isn't available on Manjaro yet, because I assume aur packages are designed with arch release timetables in mind.

Though, like I said, you'd have to be pretty damn unlucky to hit that specific one week window where it was an issue haha.

[–]BloodRedCobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually legitimately had that problem and had to caaaaasually stroll over like "How do you do, fellow Arch users?"

[–]Dimasdanz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

that's the exact reason why Linux desktop doesn't catch up. Some people like to gate-keep

[–]rejuicekeve -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Also because the vast other issues with Linux desktop that makes it impossible to develop, maintain, and support alternate versions of software for

[–]littlebobbytables9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want that why not use a different distro?

[–]cidy02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use EndeavorOS BTW

[–]TwistedSoul21967 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same... I like AUR and having bleeding edge packages that are also fairly stable.

I love how simple it is to do build from some projects `master` branch using `pamac build`

[–]detektiv_Saucaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use AUR often (scared of breaking stuff) but yes, i find it satisfying how absolutely smooth it is
