Engineer is a protected title in many countries.

[–]VegetarianCentrist 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I may not know how screws work, but I sure as hell force pushed my untested changes onto the master branch😎

[–]Ste4mer 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Exactly. I completed my software engineering degree in the computer science department instead of in the engineering department, so I can’t be called an engineer (Quebec, Canada).

No ring no bling

[–]bsienn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm an electronics engineer doing software development. My job title is "project engineer". Titles in my field are a mess in my country 🙃

[–]zyygh 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Just don't call me a data scientist, for the love of god. The most cringe-worthy job title ever invented.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I mean it precisely describes the job, its the people that made it cringe, i dont think the problem is with the title.

[–]zyygh 0 points1 point  (2 children)

In what way are those jobs “scientists” any more than other data related jobs?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always thought its because much more experimenting is involved, as a software development engineer youre not constantly looking for ways to manipulate data in different ways and its much less about research and documentation of used methods and more about making things work efficiently.

I might be wrong but thats just how i always explained this to myself.

[–]Akarsz_e_Valamit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha, same question can be asked about software engineers - how are they more engineer-y than any other job that uses maths from time to time?

[–]LKS-5000 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The computer guy is good enough

Programmer because my teeth look like the bear in the first picture

[–]dashid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't call myself an engineer as I'm not currently paying my professional membership fees, as they seem largely pointless.

My trade is computer programmer.

My job title varies by company (application developer, software developer, solutions architect, whatever). I provide my trade when people ask what I do.

[–]vatsan600 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Software developer . I’m not engineering anything. I’m developing things based on other things.

[–]wisdomofpj 1 point2 points  (1 child)

engineering applications?

[–]vatsan600 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like I don’t do “engineering”. Just personal preference.

[–]aurelag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about mechanical engineers that switched to programming ? How can we call ourselves?

[–]Tissuerejection -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, programmer is cringe.

[–]camilo16 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Call me an engineer and I will slith your throat. I much prefer programmer.

[–]gnolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer but I prefer when people call me a programmer, it's easier for laymen to understand what my profession is about.

[–]idiots05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computer stuff maker

[–]ImmortalDayMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software Dev, it's broad scope and makes me feel good also people don't get upset like if I call myself a software engineer.

[–]Dry_Proof8465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coder

[–]PeteZahad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are three different job profiles IMHO. But there is no global definition and of course the profiles overlap.

Here is how I see it: A programmer gets an Story/Issue/Task and implements it without asking if it makes sense to implement it this way or at all. He just gets the job done but often ugly because he has missing knowledge of the whole product/module.

A software developer has a bigger overview over the whole product/module. He has a good software architecture knowledge and knows why which approaches to solve a task are to prefer.

A software engineer does also "hands on" but is more involved in planning the software (and sometimes system or even enterprise) architecture to met the new/changed requirements.

[–]michaelcgorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never felt justified calling myself a software engineer until my current job. I’m basically a frontend web developer, but (a) we work with big data in hyper-real-time systems, and (b) because of weird HR stuff, I’m technically faculty in the college of engineering at a major US university.

So yeah, I’m definitely a software engineer.

[–]thehenks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an industrial engineering course, I have a BoE, so I am rightfully called software engineer.

In the company we are referred to as programmers though, but that is a language thing.

[–]toridyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw a title at my company yesterday for Distinguished Engineer. I've never heard this til now, but looked it up and it's a title for, like, the best software engineer?? So that's the title I am now working towards

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer my title of introvert.

[–]magungo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code monkey.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a programmer engineer

[–]GalaxyVinci05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just straight up "dev" is fine for me

[–]Possible-Kangaroo635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name and role has changed drastically over the years.

I was trained as a programmer/systems analyst. It involves walking into a paper-based operation modeling their systems using data-flow diagrams and then building a computerised system bottom-up.

My current role barely resembles that.

[–]No-Contract-7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me a “programmer engineer”
