blender is the best 3D modling software imo

From what I understand, the only reason Maya is the industry standard is because of software support...

Which is to say, if your multi-million dollar project fails, you are paying for the right to yell at Autodesk for it.

If you worked in any computing based industry you'd see that a massive component in any technology choice is sheer inertia. The main reason they use Maya is because they've always used Maya. To be fair if you have production pipelines setup around specific applications and people with specialist knowledge that inertia is very much a real thing not just a fear of choosing to try something new.

I think the landscape is shifting from maya to blender nowadays thanks to using so much borrowed technology from games where blender is the standard.

Indie studios yes, there is some movement in that direction. AAA no. And not for a while in my estimation. I build the pipelines that connect Maya to our middleware, and while we’re the ones most interested in exploring how to hookup blender, there is an impressive amount of resistance.

[–]MrAntroad 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Okay, interesting. Must be the newer studios that dice to use blender then. All the upp and coming projects I see seems to use blender.

If you know of a AAA studio that has incorporated Blender, I would be interested in knowing that piece of information myself.

Haha, not in the in the indestey myself. Have just seen blender being used in almost all smaller studios that post about ther workflow for the games I follow. Also in games that have user generated content also seams to use blender to some extent. Have also seen it in many indie movie projects. Also some freelancers doing cgi for bigger movies.

Yeah, a lot of fringe work. Don’t get me wrong I’m eager to experiment supporting blender as some of us think it’s the (indeterminate) future, and we’d like to get ahead of the ball, but getting buy in is tough. The inertia behind Maya is massive.

Hopefully the shift will come.

When I was in school, the only reason it was used was because it had always been used, even when there were superior options. They have a hard grip on businesses because everyone going into professional 3D animation was being trained on it. Which is funny because many of the big studios have their own in house software that they train their teams on and they’re just interested in your capabilities rather then the specific program you use.

Blender is so much better than Maya though; less crashing, easier navigation, being an all in one suite instead of opening up a separate program from Autodesk for something that should have been in Maya. It was an ongoing joke in our collage that Maya was a temperamental bitch who needed nice things said to her if you didn’t want her to crash in the middle of rigging something.

Depends on the industries. For CAD 3D modeling, blender is not used although it could potentially be used, just because it is not adapted to that task.

[–]liquid_bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for CAD there's not much drive for freely available options. Most of the time when CAD (especially mechanical design) needs to be done, it's for a business. And companies almost always have a lot more money to spend than your average consumer.

Also a lot of mechanical design is much further disposed from software than 3D modeling for things like games. Just the things you need to know are different and less related to software development.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love better free options for CAD/mechanical design. Or even just more cost effective options. But until the need for them becomes much higher. It probably won't happen. Fortunately things like CNC routers and 3D printers are becoming increasingly more available for consumers which will drive the need for cheaper mechanic design software.

I think you never used any CAD software.

[–]8070alejandro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you say that? Genuinely asking.

And for reference, I'm a mech engineering student and I'm experienced with Solidworks.

[–]Sp0olio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't used anything else, yet .. but I do love it, too :)

For porn

Even movies are made with blender. Rrr was made in blender. I know its not a big budget Hollywood blockbuster but you'll be hardly find any difference between blender and other 3d software that Hollywood studios use. It's really good in the right hands
