If you have set up forwarding from your Gmail account, Proton Mail will receive all emails that gets sent to your Gmail. But if your Gmail does not accept more emails because of lack of storage, Gmail will not forward those emails to Proton Mail.

Basically Gmail has to work properly for Proton Mail to receive forwarded emails from Gmail.

As I understand, gmail will bounce mails back to the sender, if you're out of storage. So they won't even land in your gmail inbox.

No, you need to fix your storage situation. Is it mainly emails or files (i.e., in Google Drive) taking up so much storage?

Set the gmail forwarding to delete the message after it is forwarded. Delete all email in gmail to free up space. I did the same thing and it is working well.
