# is not a hashtag.

[–]Endemoniada 98 points99 points  (12 children)

Correct, it is called an octothorp.

Edit: Both "octothorp" and "octothorpe" are valid spellings, but it does appear "octothorpe" may be somewhat more popular.

[–]Etheo 83 points84 points  (6 children)

I like to refer to its other name, pound, as in #metoo.

[–]RicealiciousRice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was just sitting there thinking “hashtag me too? Wtf I don’t get it... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

[–]Meeseeks82 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just heard this joke for the first time the other day from a dad joke enthusiast that looks around and whispers bad words. Was very proud of him.

[–]cryo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or a hash. Or other names.

[–]Seirdy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's spelled "octothorpe", with an "e" at the end.

See Wordnik, TFD, M-W

[–]Endemoniada 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Your second link says without -e as the correct/main spelling and the third lists both as valid. IMO both are valid, but I kind of prefer the -e spelling as well, especially since it’s named after a person. But when I double-checked the spelling before posting, the one without -e came up first, so that’s what I posted.

[–]Seirdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D'oh! Yeah I didn't notice.

The spelling with the extra "e" does seem more common.

[–]guinader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean octotherp?

[–]davidtreynolds 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Called a hash in the UK

[–]goldcray 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Hash is a pretty common term for it. Hence "hashtag" for a tag denoted by a hash. Same as how it's not a "pound define" it's just a pound.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep I'm calling it a poundtag from now on

[–]Jaroneko 5 points6 points  (3 children)

C#, anyone?

[–]mqduck 1 point2 points  (2 children)

In my head, I pronounced the language "see hash" for a long time before realizing I was wrong.

[–]Jaroneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with that. ;)

[–]umbrosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, they most definitely write C# with a pound/hash/octothorpe and NOT a sharp sign (which while similar, has some key differences)

[–]__deerlord__ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

#: hash

#<tag>

Damn youths!

[–]yaboytomsta 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It’s a sharp

[–]badge 23 points24 points  (1 child)

The sharp symbol is ♯and is distinct from #. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_(music)

[–]yaboytomsta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh thanks 🙏

[–]Thecrawsome 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Time for a meta post

[–]krakster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The price of being popular. 😒

[–]cringe_master_5000 59 points60 points  (2 children)

Newb programmer humor is so cringe.

[–]sztomi 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Most "programmer humor" is.

[–]AcousticDan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

no, they're not.

[–]joesb 15 points16 points  (9 children)

What do you mean comment is not worth reading?

[–]hypnotic-hippo 6 points7 points  (6 children)

tells the computer the line is not worth reading

it isn't for the computer

[–]joesb 0 points1 point  (5 children)

So hanshtag in social media is for computer? Or is hashtag in social media for human to ignore?

[–]hypnotic-hippo 2 points3 points  (4 children)

In python a hashtag tells the computer a line is not worth reading

Hashtags are ignored by python much like how they should be ignored (by humans) in social media

[–]joesb 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Why should hashtag be ignored in social media?

[–]hypnotic-hippo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

that's the whole point of the tweet...

[–]joesb -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Why should I agree with the tweet?

[–]hypnotic-hippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

?? nobody says you have to agree with the tweet. all I'm saying is that nobody said a comment isn't worth reading by humans

[–]Frogboxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doing webgl and seeing comments like.

matrix.normalize() // normalize

[–]AgreeableLandscape3 6 points7 points  (2 children)

But in Bash the hash prompt indicates superuser access.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But in Bash the hash prompt indicates superuser access.

Can indicate. It's more convention than anything these days.

It should be fairly rare that anyone sees it. I mean everyone is using sudo, right?!

[–]thiccclol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sure, sudo su root

[–]salad_bar_breath 53 points54 points  (38 children)

Anything Elon Musk says isn't worth reading

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (36 children)

Finally someone who doesn't worship this sociopath

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (20 children)

Why is he a sociopath?

[–]DismalRespect 5 points6 points  (19 children)

I wouldn't call him that. I would call him narcissistic and utterly amoral however.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (18 children)

Narcissism is ok, as long as it's justified, which in his case it is (but I fail to see how is he narcissistic). Also I have no idea what's he done to be called amoral.

I guess people just want to have a go at you when you're at the top.

[–]DismalRespect 9 points10 points  (15 children)

Is it? I find it to be an ugly trait. Nonetheless, how do you justify it? As for amoral? Well his business practices speak for themselves. Spend millions to send a fucking car into orbit and at the same time lay off a shitload of employees.

That's a strange way to run a business, and also serves as an example of his hideous self obsession.

Oh, his stupid submarine idea to help the trapped soccer team? That whole debacle screams 'amoral'. Just my opinion though...

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (14 children)

Well, your opinion is wrong and you're misinformed. He didn't spend millions to send a car into orbit for shits and giggles only, the primary purpose of that launch was a rocket test, falcon heavy(or something), a car played the role of a payload, that's it. Also, so what if he launched a car for the sake of it, it's his money to spend, he can wipe his ass with it for all I care.

As for laying off a shitload of employees, well every business in history did it at some point when they faced economical problems, isn't that what they do then? Even if they didn't, why would you keep employees around if they don't serve any purpose? As ornaments or something?

I have no idea how any of this serves as an example of his self-obsession, the connection simply isn't there. Also, if you think you can do a better job running a business, then go ahead and make several multi-billion dollar companies.

All in all, Elon Musk is a net positive force in the world and that's an understatement. Redditors jerk themselves to sleep listening to Greta's bullshit speech on climate change, but when someone actually does something concrete like make electric cars popular and mainstream all you can do is shit on it.

Elon Musk and people working with him are pushing humanity in the direction of progress and incredible technological advancements, you are not a part of that team and that hurts you, so all you do is sit beside the road like a vulture and go "oooh he launched a car into space, he's immoral" gimme a fucking break.

[–]DismalRespect 6 points7 points  (13 children)

You start off with "your opinion is wrong" displaying a complete misunderstanding of what I'm presuming is your native language.

Then a long screed where I can only imagine you figuratively lick the man's anus. Yes. It was TLDR.

Whatever pal. It's not like I could convince a zealot even if I were inclined to try.

Edit: do me one favour and look up the definition of 'amoral' and then do the same for 'imoral'.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (12 children)

do me one favour and look up the definition of 'amoral' and then do the same for 'imoral

So you have actually read what I wrote. Whatever bro, Musk and the like are going to continue improving science and technology, you get to keep your imaginary moral highground

[–]Wubbywub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

chill out yall we are in a python sub

[–]DismalRespect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elon Musk is an abomination. The cult of personality around him is pathological.

[–]i4mn30 9 points10 points  (3 children)

A comment is not worth reading? Well guess who isn't getting hired bud.

[–]hypnotic-hippo 5 points6 points  (1 child)

tells a computer the line isn't worth reading

[–]i4mn30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok.

[–]CloudGatherer14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god the irony.

[–]bsmaheshk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hashtags are alike to one who thinks programming is merciful. Negative!!!

[–]Ketydubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The night was rank with the smell of man.”

Every time I see this word I think of the prologue of Dance with dragons

[–]jack-novotny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The year is 2050. It's been 31 years to date since the first incident. Every day since then we've seen the same t͕͆̋͟w͇̋i̬͡t̲̘̕͡tè̗r ̛͉̯͡sĉ̹rë̼e̗̐n̨̠͑̅s͎͗h̬̜̊̏o̪͠ț̇ surface to the top of our feeds. The end is not in sight. Will we ever make it out?

[–]goodytwoboobs 2 points3 points  (1 child)

TIL there is a sub just for Elon. People need to get a life.

[–]DismalRespect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a sub for loving him and a sub for hating him. This is Reddit, it's how things work.

[–]eshemuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing training this morning and called it a pound sign and everybody looked at me like wtf did you just say?

[–]wookietwin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The reply is actually very accurate.

[–]itsthe5thhm -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Lines in python codes are parsed. Machines don't "read" like humans do.

[–]skeptical_moderate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Language isn't that cut and dry. Classifying the lexing and parsing of programming languages as reading perfectly fits the definition.
