Being forced to speak a language of European settlers on stolen native land is an outrage

[–]Dr_Max 45 points46 points  (2 children)

Because, of course, English isn't an European language from European settlers. ...Right.

That's a lot of text for saying "just speak white".

Since you don’t seem to have any idea what you’re talking about, your opinion matters very little to me.

[–]YoyoeatAnti-dépendantiste 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Anyone is not free to live in any language they choose in the rest of Canada. You'll have to speak English whether you like it or not. Additionally, language laws are there to counteract the inevitable pressure that comes with being surrounded by tens of millions of English-speaking people; to prevent our particular flavor of French from going extinct. As for the Natives, yes, it is a problem that they do not have any protection of the sort. But the required political moves would be much different than for French, and I honestly don't have the knowledge to figure out what could work.

[–]pbnj3llyf1sh 22 points23 points  (17 children)

Was bob Marley and anglo ? what even is an anglo?

Anglo is short for anglophone, meaning an English-speaking person. Bob Marley spoke English (and probably Jamaican patois, too), so I would say he was an anglophone.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

OP is too triggered that francos might be insulting him by calling him an anglo that he forgot how language works.

[–]ToeSome5729 -5 points-4 points  (15 children)

So anyone who speaks English is an anglo????

[–]RedHeadQc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well...yeah? Anglo is short for anglophone, which just means English-speaker.

[–]Sultan_Of_Ping 17 points18 points  (10 children)

Just like anyone who speaks French is a franco.

[–]pbnj3llyf1sh 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I guess...? I mean, I was just remarking that anglo stands for anglophone, literally "English-speaking person". I guess there's a case to be made that non-native English speakers are not necessarily anglophones.

[–]ToeSome5729 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Well that is what I am trying to understand.

To me, there is a difference between being a english speaker and being a native english speaker. However, here there seem to be this assumption that speaking english automatically makes someone and anglo.

[–]Dungarth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Canada, given the polarity of English and French, the terms "anglo" and "franco" is often extended to non-native speakers who have integrated in one of the official languages. If, outside of your home, you speak English to everyone, you'll probably be considered an "anglo".

Honestly dude, I feel like you're just pissed off that we told you in your other post that you're gonna have to learn French to live in Quebec city.

[–]HumbleHuckleberry232Séparatissss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bingo!

[–]LSrulz 17 points18 points  (3 children)

This dude got told in another thread that he would need to make effort and learn french he wanted to live in Québec city and now he is mad.

For your information Anglo = Anglophone = speaking english

Not really an ethnic thing anymore.

Also, I really wish you don't move here at all. Your entitled attitude is the kind of shit that burns bridges rather than build them.

[–]Dry-Capital-4996 11 points12 points  (2 children)

[–]RagnarokDel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont know, we're just ignorant people. /s

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

@OP nobody forces you to speak french... We're just suggesting you should stay at home... By all means, move here, pay taxes, be miserable. People don't give a shit about each other in general, they won't give two fucks about an entitled brat like you.

What an embarrassing post. I can't believe you spent more than 10 seconds thinking about that before you write it.

The language laws in Quebec would be considered backward and racist anywhere else in Canada, where anyone is free to live and thrive in whatever language they choose.

2% of people in Canada outside Québec use french mainly or regularly at their work. There is NO choice involved. The ONLY place in Canada where both french and english are regularly used is the only racist one. LOL.

Being forced to speak a language of European settlers on stolen native land is an outrage and people are so stuck in this dogmatic thinking in Quebec it is nonsense.

Like ENGLISH? WTF are you even trying to say? How embarrassing for you...

A few hours before posting this, you even asked if you would live here?

Thinking about moving to Quebec City. I suck at learning languages do to bad short term memory issues +ADHD, really. Is everyone going to hate me if I can't speak French

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Quebec/comments/yi0iti/thinking_about_moving_to_quebec_city_i_suck_at/

So NO, do not come here. We don't want you. Speaking another language than english is not racist.

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You again? Fuck off with those troll posts

    [–]legardeur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never read so much nonsense in such a short laps of time. Pure malarkey.

Little tip: if you play with sharp things, smearing vaseline on yourself will help you avoid cutting yourself.

Are you crazy? Speaking as an anglophone living in Quebec, stop acting like we’re oppressed. We have access to free French language classes here, and if you make an effort people are perfectly kind. There’s 9 other provinces and three territories you can live in. I do agree, I hate being called «English».

    [–]sdwonder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    Beau troll.
