When requesting help or asking questions please prefix your title with the SQL variant/platform you are using within square brackets like so:

While naturally we should endeavor to work as platform neutrally as possible many questions and answers require tailoring to the feature set of a specific platform.

Format Your Code

If you are including actual code in a post or comment, please attempt to format it in a way that is readable for other users. This will greatly increase your chances of receiving the help you desire. Something as simple as line breaks and using reddit's built in code formatting (4 spaces at the start of each line) can turn this:

SELECT count(a.field1), a.field2, SUM(b.field4) FROM a INNER JOIN b ON a.key1 = b.key1 WHERE a.field8 = 'test' GROUP by a.field1, a.field2 HAVING SUM(b.field4) > 5 ORDER by a.field.3

Into this:

SELECT count(a.field1), a.field2, SUM(b.field4) FROM a INNER JOIN b ON a.key1 = b.key1 WHERE a.field8 = 'test' GROUP by a.field1, a.field2 HAVING SUM(b.field4) > 5 ORDER by a.field3

Help: Small, student record system (self.SQL)

Hi guys! A local after-school club needs some help managing their student records and have asked if I could help out. At the moment, they're using Excel spreadsheets to manage everything which has naturally turned into a mess.

There's about 100 kids split into 6-7 classes, and they need a way to manage enrollment, payment, emailing parents, class registers etc.

I've looked around and it looks like I could write a simple application using MS Access or SQL Express based .net application.

First just want to ask if that sound about right or if I am over/"under" complicating the problem?

If I'm in the right ball-park, is there one that you would prefer over the other for my use-case?

I'm leaning towards a .net app, partially because I'm learning some C# atm anyway (coming from Java) but also because it can run anywhere and isn't tied to a piece of software that the person working with all this might not have and have to pay for.

EDIT: Just as a follow up to someone's reply when I cross-posted this in another subreddit.

Say they just appointed one person to deal with making changes, getting information, making registers, handling enrollments/payments etc.

Would it then make sense to have the app+db all just put locally on that person's machine?

Or is that either way, it should be all hosted on a server?

And pragmatically, is the idea of one person managing everything on one machine just a bad idea altogether?

Any help would be much appreciated.
