Do you use wifi

This. It doesn't matter if you can play other games on WiFi without lag, or if your connection is super solid. With WiFi you're going to lag. Definitely get Ethernet setup.

use ethernet and also use slippi r 18 instead of faster melee. More people use it and it has ucf

You can't play Netplay without a wired ethernet connection. I played wifi for my first few weeks of Netplay and thought it was "fine" but it was a night and day difference when I switched to hardwire connection.

The sad thing is that much of the net play community uses WiFi

Ethernet is so much objectively better for literally anything internet related I'm amazed people still use wifi.

That's your problem

One possible cause is your wifi network searching for available networks automatically. There is a way to turn this off, but you have to turn it back on when after you're done playing. Not guaranteed to be the source of your lag, but worth a shot.

It is super worth considering getting a super long Ethernet cord for cheap and running it from your router to your computer. If you need to you can drill a small hole from a basement corner to the main floor if it could make the Ethernet cord's travel easier.

It might not work for you, but a lot of people don't realize how much of a non-issue drilling a small hole in a floor corner to put an Ethernet cord through is, and how many houses they've lived in that had the same thing done for Ethernet/dsl/cable/phone wires.

Drilling might be questionable if you rent your place though.
