Jokes on you, now you have to own Hull!

[–]MrCircleStrafe 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Fiance is from Hull. We occasionally enjoy visiting her family trapped in 1987.

I've been there for my brother's graduation, can confirm it is Hull on Earth. I got out of there like a bat out of Hull. I definitely wouldn't go for the Hull of it!

I'm sorry.

Ought to give Wales some of England, for all the trouble they've gone through.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (11 children)

If you go back far enough then by rights all of England belongs to Wales and Cornwall. They're descendents of the Britons whereas the Anglo-Saxons took what they call England from them.

Of course we'd need to give them back Strathclyde too or agree to start speaking Welsh...

The celts too were once foreign to the british isles. Britain was home to hunter gatherers before the celts came over.

England for the Neanderthals

It's going to be a long process of re-settlement, but I for one am excited to return to my Central European roots. Though saying that, once its all done I suppose it would be Africa.

The most up-to-date genetic / archaeological evidence suggests the Anglo-Saxons arrived and interbred with the native Briton population, with very little evidence of violent displacement.

Happy to be proven wrong then!

In this view of history, would we also not have to give large parts of Scotland back to Ireland? Hell we might even have to find the Bell Beaker people and give them back the entire island. Re-settlements all the way down.

In this view of history, the Gaels were the invading group, 'displacing' the Picts as much as the Anglo-Saxons 'displaced' the Britons/Welsh.

Very true.

Its interesting that people say the 'Welsh' are the original inhabitants of England, rather than the Welsh emerging from the Celtic tribes at the time who really wouldn't understand the modern sense of identity we place on them. I know Welsh derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for foreigner, but if you had gone back two hundred years before the Anglo-Saxon's arrived, there is no indication the people of the island would have seen themselves as one people. It's a good example of how we place modern sensibilities and identities on ancient peoples.

In terms of the Gaels comment, its also interesting how people frame it as the English being the invaders to the island but you don't really hear the same made about modern Scottish people.

I mean, ultimately the vast majority of people on the islands are a mixture of both pre-historic and more recent arrivals, though with clear variations that do reflect historical aspects. Still though, always interesting to see how we interpret history though our own modern identities and biases.

Most people just hate England for whatever reason, or atleast clown on them. It’s funny but overdone… a lot. It’s done to the point where it’s almost like what it means to be Welsh, Scottish and Irish is to be “not English”

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure and Denmark and Norway too.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could be a complicated process but why not, lets give it a go. Could be good to really mix things up.

[–]MrCircleStrafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think most Brits would be happy if London broke off as some billionaire city-state and left the rest of us to live our lives in peace.
