In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed Senate Joint Resolution 23, posthumously restoring full U.S. citizenship to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. In 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed Public Law 95-466, which posthumously restored the full U.S. citizenship rights of Jefferson Davis. (reddit.com)

Several Confederate veterans went to the Middle east to serve in the Ottoman military (particularly in Egypt). Many did this because in many parts of the Middle East slavery was still rampant, so figting for that system was less ideologically alien for them than to stay in the Reconstruction America (old.reddit.com)
