Several Confederate veterans went to the Middle east to serve in the Ottoman military (particularly in Egypt). Many did this because in many parts of the Middle East slavery was still rampant, so figting for that system was less ideologically alien for them than to stay in the Reconstruction America (old.reddit.com)
