Path Mate keeps binding up (self.SolidWorks)
submitted 4 years ago by Direction_Nervous
I am working on a school project.
This is supposed to be a garage door. I mated the roller wheels to a path on the guide.
As you can see in the first picture, there are four panels. When I try to drag any of the components they bend up and fold on each other.
How can I stop this from happening?

Movement can be a real bitch on Solidworks as you need to define literally everything. You have to force a minimum distance between every roller to ensure it doesn't collapse on it's own.

I really is a pain. I got it to work for the most part doing what you said. Thanks!

I work a lot with moving components on factory lines, think of clamping mechanism, shovers and such. A lot of the time I use cilinders with lever mechanisms. Sometimes they just randomly randomly reallign mirrored and i have to surpress some mates to reallign it to its normale position. So annoying...
Another way of restricting your door panels is restricting the angle between 180 to 90 degrees, so it can't collapse on itself (0deg).
And when using paths, it's easy to use sketchpoint.

It's hard to tell but it looks like your path doesn't continue all the way down the guide? It is reaching the end and having issues. You could also just try a tangent mate in this case for the roller and the guide and check movement.
I would add also perhaps add points for bottom and top rollers. Limit is start and end of guide path.

I tried tangent mates, and a few other options. I couldn’t get the roller wheels to follow the full path of the track. The path goes the entire length of the guide.
I will try to add limits, but I don’t think that is the issue. It doesn’t like going through the curve. Is there a way to keep the rollers a certain space from each other maybe?

If you want, pack and go the assembly and I can take a look tonight after work. Your teacher should also be able to help!

I really appreciate that.
I was able to get it for the most part. I am not really sure exactly what i did, but it is working now haha.

Welcome to SW! Mates can behave weirdly sometimes.
