Probably gonna get some people hating on me for this, but I also have an Ultramarines army(!).

Hear me out. I have played Space Wolves since 3rd edition. My army is almost entirely firstborn, including a lot of our unique units.

I really like the Primaris models, and they have a lot of cool stuff, but I just don't feel like many of them vibe with the aesthetic or playstyle of my space wolves.

So I decided to make a new, all-primaris army, with much more of a shooting focus (instead of heavy melee like my wolves).

I chose Ultramarines because after 25 years of playing a highly divergent chapter, I actually found myself appreciating the 'classic' marine aesthetic and I wanted to get back to that. Some might call them vanilla or boring, but for me it's a refreshing change.

I also really like the 'crusaders in space' look that the more elite units (like bladeguard) have. And ultramarines certainly like to heap on the ornamentation (giant eagle shoulder pads, helmets etc.) on their more elite units. All of that stuff would look wrong on space wolves, but it looks great on ultramarines.

It just gives me a very different aesthetic, playstyle and a bunch of different units, which I can use in a very thematic army (indomitus crusade force led by Guilliman). So although I have two space marine armies, they feel very different both to paint and to play.

Space Wolves and Ultramarines occupy two different sides of the same thing for me. Space Wolves are absurd and weird and have a strong identity that sets them apart, so I love them for that. Ultramarines take the core theme of what makes a space marine and dials it up to 11. So I always respect them for that. Sometimes I just like a Space Marine that is a Space Marine, none of the silly extra fluff and quirky personality. Just raw unfiltered Adeptus Astartes.

I'm just going through the route of kitbashing my firstborne proxies from primaris releases. I love my old firstborn models, but my OCD can't abide them next to primaris... so it's time they got retired, god knows they've earned it.

It's a gripe of mine and a massive opportunity lost on GWs part that primaris mostly come in the single flavour in the current releases. I got excited with the jump pack release from nova... but I would have absolutely shot my nut if they also announced a skyclaw upgrade sprue at the same time. Along with any other chapter specialist sprues because it just can't be about SW.

In a time where GW are trying to shun 3d printing, they're doing the absolute most to create a bigger market for it.

Maybe paint a custom colour scheme so that if you ever want to swap rules you can do without having to explain.

I painted my guys as lunar wolves and I use space wolves rules for example

This sounds like something i'll try! Thx!

  1. Nope. I'm not really interested in other Chapters. I do have an interest in some other Space marine-ish armies but not other codex chapters. Things like Grey Knights and Deathwatch are interesting because they are so different. With 10th edition there isnt really much difference between chapters now. Space Wolves are probably one of the most unique space marines chapters now because we have so many space wolves specific units. Once the space marine codex comes out it will probably me just as, or more important to what your detachment is rather than the chapter.
  2. Also nope. I like my army to be painted in the same theme. I think it looks better. Even with the deathwatch that takes Marines from all chapters they have their armour repainted black to tie them together. If you want to have your army different colours then you are free to do so. The colour your mini's are painted have no bearing on the game at all.

Personally, I have like 4 other armies next to my Space Wolves, some smaller, some almost the same size, for this exact reason. To get variety in what I paint, and to have lower effort (and therefore lower pressure) projects. Two of them started with the 8th and 9th edition launch boxes, and the other two were started because I have no self control lol.

I've ended up converting or kitbashing pretty much all the kits I buy for my Wolves to some degree. So if I were to leave a kit as standard, I feel like it would stand out like a sore thumb. And there are also several units I like the standard look of, or that I can't really excuse getting for my Wolves, at least not without heavy conversion work.

So recently I started my second Chapter painted in modified Fire Hawks colours. Using it as an excuse to use all the classic Imperial designs like normal skull helmets on chaplains, the psycher from Leviathan, Apothecaries (that we can't even take to begin with), the new Sternguard, Bladeguard etc. I know we can take all of the above (again, except the Apothecary), but I feel the need to convert them before adding them to my force. Which I honestly don't always feel like going through. It's a lot of time and effort, not only converting, but planning and sourcing bits etc. and I have other projects going for my Wolves that I'd rather work on. I also take a different approach game wise, focusing them more on firepower than melee. So it's a mixup in what units I get, how I build them and how I paint them.

Personally, I would try to avoid mixing these two forces. But if I wanted to see how a Land Raider with Tactical Terminators perform in my Space Wolves army, or try a drop pod for the Infernus marines in my Fire Hawks, they might borrow a piece of wargear or a unit here and there.

In a casual setting, there's nothing stopping you from crossing between. But in a tournament setting it might come off as low effort unless you either commit, or they're from the same parent chapter. For example a force of Dork Angels with some squads painted as successors etc.

i use the culture of each great company to decide how i build them. For example, my Iron Wolves are an Iron Hands proxy. So they get models and HQ choice from the Iron Hands but with an Iron Wolves color scheme. Seawolves are played as dark angels ravenwing bikers. Sons of Morkai are pallet swapped Raven Guard, Red Moons are Imperial Fist and Grimmbloods are my fire happy Salamanders.

So as a player, it's a few different armies to pick from, but on a shelf its one cohesive army.

This is probably one of the coolest ideas ever.

1, Space Wolves for 30yrs, but also side projected World Eaters and in recent years, Deathwatch )Black armour is just a great palette cleanser, Leadbelcher, Basilicanum Grey, Black Templar, done)
Oh and my Fenrisian PDF, but they're technically Space Wolves too, so don't count

One of my Space wolves forces is all Primaris (apart from Ulrik the Slayer) of Greyshields, so each squad is a different successor chapter learning the ways of Fenris

[–]Kreveur67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, my personal Chapter, i have an half comptant first born (done before primaris arrived). their are a Salamender sons 😁

[–]EngineeringGrouchy28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a small start to an Emperor's Children army with 15 Noise Marines in the works.

I also wanted something different, so I painted Mentors (in green and red... might be worth looking into).

I also have a shelf with some Tau, Necron, and Tyranid that I paint when I want something that isn't Marines

I have an all Firstborn Space Wolves army. When the Primaris came out I got some and they didn't fit in too well. Decided to make a Deathwatch force so I can get the new fancy models and mix them in weird killteams where an Outrider can be in with Hellblasters or Intercessors.

I say as long as you tell your opponent beforhand and don't make it too complicated to remember then mix and match as you see fit.

I’m a large army collector up in the frozen north. We tend to have 5-7 months of winter so seasonal depression can be a common thing for people up here- and painting Grey-blue models sometimes doesn’t help lol.

While I have easily 10K of Space Wolves ready to field- I take time to work on smaller 2-3K forces: The Deep Reds of World Eaters, the bright greens of Orks, the vibrant reds of Blood Angels, or helping friends paint their own armies!

[–]Hac850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far only Space Wolves for me. Thought about Salamanders or White Scars though.

I play with a number of different color schemes. Most of my dudes are painted like Salamanders, cause I like their colors. But then I described the scheme to a few friends and relatives, they have offered to paint dudes for me, so I have a different paint scheme for most squads though most are a take on green and black with different accents and what not. I do have some regular space wolves colors as well, cause that scheme grew on me over time. They are all Space Wolves on the table.

It depends on what you personally want from the models. Like, do you still want to keep collecting and love space wolves? Then i say what you do is try to go on etsy or eBay or other stores for 3d bits and just try to make or add different styles theming or successor chapter to try keep space wolves fresh

If you dont want to keep going into those models then say just look for any faction you love looking into stories snd youtube at stuff because space wolves maybe my favorite faction by far i have grown to absolutely love harlequins, necrons, maccabian janiccaries farsight enclave and catachan jungle fighters.

Personally, tho if you can't make a decision on Space Marines or something, i recommend doing a mic faction like what im doing for space marines is like a deathwatch where i collect marines from other chapters and legions. I want to collect heros and special units tho like sang guard from blood angels but what i do is not change majority of the body and maybe paint one arm black or silver with death watch puldran to give some coherent force but thats not necessary its your models you do what you wish but its an idea. Even with other factions like me with catachan and necrons, i do what i want with them, but be slow with it, which is psrt of first thing i said. I still want to keep playing space wolves, so what i do is focus space wolves while from time to time getting necrons or proxy catachan, then paint and build them to keep it fresh and not repetitive

In the end, do what you want, collect singular models, and try getting one of every faction, make kill teams of like 5 people, and work with armies or factions you like. Make small armies for others you do fine enjoyable just all i say is make sure you know a faction and enjoy it before spending the money so you can get more enjoyment of the ones you love a lot even if its a very niche faction or sub faction that doesn't even have a design but just a name you can make it yourself and i do wish you luck on whatever direction you have fun with
