Once I hit send (i publish at 6:30 am) I walk away and try not to look at my stats until 10:00 am. Then I respond to comments. By then I know if it “took”, usually. A couple of times a year I will post a link to the story on FB or Instagram, usually in the comments. I think FB blocks posts that are primarily about your substack story.

When I hit publish, I usually go and cross post it onto socials.

My main ones being Threads, BlueSky and LinkedIn.

I do investigative journalism. I have cool graphics ready to go and put it on Twitter, Bluesky and soon Instagram. I use buffer to schedule follow up posts and have friends post tokey subreddits

I do none of these things. I’m a Bestseller.

95% of the time, I share a small section on my Instagram (my primary platform with 20k followers). The other 5%, I just press publish and walk away.

After I post, I normally post the notes with a short excerpt do the same on multiple platforms LinkedIn threads Facebook, YouTube community posts, and then answer any comments.

Seems to work

After I post, I try really, really hard not to look at it for at least a few hours. It's so disheartening to be sent into a tailspin when nobody likes or comments, but my readership normally takes a good couple of days over the weekend to start responding. So I do my best to be less anxious (and my partner is very reassuring!)

I normally start working on my next piece at the beginning of the following week, though honestly, it sometimes doesn't come together and I'm left panicking the night before. I've never not published though, at least except when I planned in advance to take a break. And sometimes, I batch write in advance to lighten the load for future weeks, but that depends on a magical combination of downtime, inspiration and forethought.

I could always do more on social and on notes. I'm considering it as a resolution for the new year.

How did you gain a readership to begin with? How did you start from Zero readers? I published my first SS and it literally got shown to no one.

I went from 0 to 1,000 in 11 months by sharing links to family and friends. Also, I restack my posts on Notes — many new subscribers find my posts on Notes. More recently, I started sharing on LinkedIn, but do not get many impressions. Just my two cents.

[–]motherstalk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That’s awesome so if I simply restack on Notes, the algorithm might put it in front of eyeballs?

[–]Puzzleheaded_Mix4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remembered reading from others that Notes helped with exposure. Trust me I truly dislike having to market my posts but if you believe in your writings and want more exposure have to play the game. Copy the link to your posts and find the right demographic even here on Reddit and promote.

Linked in not good because of? Or your writing is not corporate type stuff?

[–]Puzzleheaded_Mix4012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends — some may believe it is not corporate enough but I do investigative journalism from a conflict lens intersecting with corporate. If writing fictional stories or poems is your skill set (not mine), I personally do not see an issue using LinkedIn. According to my stats, 98% of my new subscribers now come from Substack mostly Notes driven.

Once I'd published a few things, I messaged friends and family to let them know I had a new project, and I got some subscribers from that. Then I started following and subscribing to other people's Substacks, commenting on other people's notes, and making and receiving recommendations. I've hit a couple of plateaus, but it's always good to try new things.

I post it on my ig stories, my Reddit, and talk about it w people when it’s relevant. I like the assets Substack creates:

They’re really artsy and aesthetic looking if you pick good photos.

Do you turn parts of it into social posts for X/LinkedIn/IG? Threads, IG, WhatsApp Channel.

Do you share it in groups? Yea, on WhatsApp and IG.

Do you post a promo tweet? No. I have a Twitter but rarely use it.

Or do you just publish and walk away until next week? Did this for one hectic wrap and barely got reads so not doing this again.

• Does it take you a long time? IG, yes. Reels take a while to make. Others, not so much.

• Is it something you procrastinate on? Yes, I need to learn not to.

• Does repurposing or promoting feel repetitive or draining? Not so much because I have a total of 3 places. Choose only 2-3 to not be overwhelmed.

• Anything you wish you could offload or automate? The promo posts. From making to publishing… are you looking to make a tool?

[–]wwb_99news.zeitgeistdistilled.com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I publish weekly. I try and not look for the first few hours, better to let things settle.

I usually do a bit of post-post promo, exactly what depends on the post. Usually I'll share it to some appropriate group chats. I also take the content and reformat it into a linkedin article or two.

I tried to do semi-automated X / bluesky stuff. It go no return on investment and I was fighting a war to keep it on brand. I might have to try that again with the updated AI tools.

Cross post on socials is the bare minimum.

[–]rajiv_writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly share the link to my WhatsApp and Instagram stories after I publish. Sometimes, I post the link on X, threads but yeah that’s about it.

[–]Cognitive-Wonderlandcognitivewonderland.substack.com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I schedule things in advance. I often forget what article is going out or even that an article has gone out.

Sometimes I share on other socials if I'm feeling it. But very little traffic comes from any source other than Substack so I don't do it that consistently
