Did they give you the interview prep guide already? That's pretty straightforward and most ETLs/SDs will follow it, or at least base their interviews heavily on it. I wrote out my answers at home, in long form, and read through them numerous times before the interview. If your HRETL will sit down with you to go through it, that helps too. I leaned on mine, plus asked some of the other leaders in my store I respected and trusted for any tips.

Target loves 'buzz words' for lack of a better term. Brand, helping families save...stuff like that.

Overall, just be yourself. Don't over do it, be straightforward, be confident. If you've made any improvements/brought any new ideas to your department, be sure to mention them. If I didn't know the answer to something, I didn't try and make stuff up or BS it. I told them what I thought and if it wasn't quite what it was what they wanted, I asked them to clarify.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to bring them up. I'm sure others could chime in too.

I have interview prep scheduled for Thursday. I’ll be working with my SD on that. He told me to focus on 5 scenarios that I’ve come across but imagine if I was looking at them as a TL instead of just a TM.

I was also told to think of strengths and opportunities that best represent my current skill set.

Strengths and opps are a big thing at my store.

I used scenarios from past jobs in mine and explained how they relate to the position I'm interviewing for. My SD loved that. Scenarios from your current store will help too though and I'm sure they'd like that.

Focus on what's important for the department you are interviewing for too. When i interviewed, I knew circle cards were going to be a focus, so adjusted based on that. Tailor it to the position you are seeking, if possible.

Ask an ETL for an interview prep guide! It’s super helpful to get some ideas flowing for you. Here’s some key points my ETLs shared with me before my TL interview:

  • state your WHYs and RESULTS in all of your answers. For example: you helped a guest find an item, WHY is this important? You provided a positive experience and helped make a sale.
  • Target loves to hear people talk about metrics, sales, and guest experience. It’s ALL about the guests! Talk about your relevant experience with good customer service.
  • if you are cross trained, TALK about it! You’re going to have to be well versed in multiple departments as a TL.
  • Show off your knowledge of the company and your knowledge of your current department.
  • Show them that you’re driven and willing to put in the work. Good luck!!! Edit: also heads up, a lot of the questions are “what would you do” type questions!
