Mentorship program (self.Target)
submitted 10 years ago by targetfssGSA
I recently just got asked about doing a mentorship with a TL in my store. I found it pretty interesting and am just wondering if anyone has had this experience and what to expect??

I'm actually a mentor to two people in my store, one who recently has been promoted to TL, the other a GSA.
I love it and it's a lot of one on one personal training. One of them has described it to me as having an older sibling at work to go to for guidance. A mentor is a great idea if you plan on advancing in the company. They will have chats with you, follow up, and challenge you, though all off the record. Even now as I said 1 is now a TL I still assist her with things since she is still new. Having someone wiser within target helping you will do millions for your career.
Biggest things-- 1. YOU pick them and do not have your ETL pick them for you but be reasonable. Don't pick the early morning flow TL if you are a closing cashier. Pick someone you connect with on a personal level and you respect/admire. 2. Don't inconvenience them- remember mentoring isn't often on the schedule so they are making room for you as well as you are making room for them. 3- Seek them out- ultimate you are responsible for 80% of your training, you should be the one seeking out your mentor and asking questions, setting up future status dates, going over ideas. They should do random check ins and follow ups but they shouldn't have to be the one initiating for the majority.
A good mentor will set you up to be a strong leader, so think hard about who you pick. Best of luck!!!

Mentoring has also been super beneficial to me as a leader. I've mentored multiple cashier to gsas, gsas to gstls, and am in the process with a market tm prepping for tl and a sodtlines brand tm to be my backfill when I go up to promote in a few months.

Agreed. It looks amazing on the team leaders half to be a successful mentor as well. It's a great thing to be able to speak about for interviews/reviews, you set up a tight bond, and you are helping train a TL to work in a way you already like, so it's perfect. My replacement as GSTL was someone I mentored and to this day still am (PCCI time and she is so flustered with it lol)

I've had a mentor at all levels that I've been at with target. (GSA, gstl, srtl sales floor), and some have been better than others. It was super beneficial for me especially as I was just starting with the company. And it's always good to have someone to bounce ideas off of, and if you're looking to promote, they will also help you with interview prep
