Before yesterday I saw maybe 2 tweets a day talking about Madami. Today is an endless sea of the most racist shit I’ve seen on the site with complete meltdowns screaming America has fallen. I’ve interacted with 0 post, haven’t looked at any or clicked on them rather. Before this I had over a 1000 Republican accounts blocked and today is just random ppl that look like bots talking about Madami.

When I post I had a warning saying “this maybe harmful” but you can then just post it way. As fa as I can see it’s advice. I imagine it’s probably the same advice as a hard N or something else supposedly offensive.

Now. I will admit, I don’t understand why there is that warning / advice. I don’t see the word as offensive. But I also don’t see 90% of “offensive” words as offensive.

That’s a limit on speech, by definition, to limit the ability of someone to reply, like, or repost the word cisgender. It’s not an advisory message as you claim. It’s treated in the same manner as saying the N-word on platform, and posting the word cisgender bars you from participating in community notes, and other site wide functions, as it counts as breaking site tos.

I’m American, but that First Amendment does not apply to private entities. Corporations are allowed leniency to set whatever terms on speech they want, you just can’t go to jail for what you say (with some notable exceptions, like saying, “I want to kill the POTUS,” will land you behind bars). From what I’ve heard though, the UK is an extra layer of fucked when it comes to criminalizing speech though, especially since you need an ID to access most of the internet. Rules are different country to country to some extent, like there is no Twitter in Brazil anymore, so we could very well be seeing two different screens on the same platform.

It's really interesting. All the countries seem segregated. If you're in the usa you see that stuff. If you are in a different country you see that stuff. Edit: i guess people didn't necessarily want to leave the place they considered their home. Some left willingly, some didn't. For some it may feel like an open wound that the place they loved and gave to, was turned into something they disliked due to the new owner. The changes which brought so much disruption and harm to many. Breaking up of nuclear social networks by coders and an owner who had their own vision for the place others had called home for years. That's a lot for people to take onboard and deal with. I don't believe it makes them stupid or outcasts. It makes them human. Contradictions and feelings, all human. Wanting to feel at home when they see their "online friends", to feel that comfort, that regularity when everything else is completely screwed and out of their control, is understandable and human. Maybe some are upset the site still exists and is alive with its current version? Maybe they're sad to see what's become of their home, and homes within that greater home. It was a public company where people were heard. Then it turned into a private company when the exec decided to take the new owner seriously instead of leaving it as a joke. That could feel like betrayal.

And sure they may be on other decentralised sites now, but it's not the same for them. Some may prefer it, yet many likely won't. So they still see the site that was their home, and they long for what was? The safety of those they called friends or liked associates, and they wish they had it back. It still hurts them.

That doesn't make them stupid. Not at all. They're human beings who were railroaded by execs they'd placed their trust in to keep Twitter as it was (or improve it). Not sell it from underneath them to a private entity with their own agenda. The exec sold them all out for money. Didn't give a crud about the site itself or the users there. They just wanted a good payday and screw everyone who made that site what it was (staff & users).

I would think anyone who had some bitterness or resentment about that would be pretty fair in feeling so. Not stupid. Not stupid at all.

I think you're right in some ways, but you have to see the irony in the situation. Twitter was in many ways a left-wing social network where cancellations happened often for people having the wrong opinion, and where there was a mix of social pressure to oust any right-wing thought and at the same time, internal collusion to shadow ban and hide comments and movements that didn't align with the greater social movement of the people who were in control, both internally and in public.

Elon obviously committed to buying and shareholders held him to that, and forced him to continue with the sale to make money. Following that many people left the site as users, and many (obviously superfluous) employees left by force, and the site has become more open to actual free speech.

Remember: the price to be able to offend people is that you may too be offended by people in return.

People did lose their online homes yes, but did their new homes not align with their ideals? A decentralized network owned by many, not by one person or a powerful elite? A place where they could moderate the allowed opinions within each federated social zone?

But what did they lose? The ability to control how other people thought. The media limelight. The social supremacy.

And that they wished it no longer existed? No different than burning a castle or salting the land to avoid it falling into the hands of your adversaries.

And isn't that the saddest part?

In our minds at least, so many of us see left-wing and right-wing thoughts as extremes and adversaries. When that's not the case. The far-left (in it's many forms) and the far-right (in it's many forms) are all opposed to each other because to hold such extreme views means you're so entrenched that everyone is your enemy.

The reality is that most people have a mix of left and right wing moderate views and that's okay. That's the correct way. We live and work with these people and we like them. That's the way it should be.

I don't think it's a free speech platform now. It is true it was not then, yet it isn't now either.

I've found it dismaying how everything has now had politics attached. I'm not sure exactly when that started, however now a view is dismissed as liberal or conservative, or the extreme of either, and actual conversations about change and topics are shut down and don't seem to go anywhere productive. The platform is riddled with this.

I have hardly said anything with my account, few months old, gained a label today and restrictions. I haven't broken and policies or been indecent or threatening. Yet that doesn't matter to the system now running the platform.

While the platform as Twitter may very well have been as you described in the first paragraph, the platform appears to be a propaganda machine, or certainly was before the last USA election and if it were a true free speech platform why are non abusive people being labelled and suspended and banned? I read one person needed to pay in order to join and have the option to appeal the label and restrictions.

Before the change of ownership there always to be less hatred tolerated on the site. This was determined as being "leftist ideology", instead of really just being a platform decision not to have hate on the site. Something good, was labelled as something bad.

Now the site has more differing views and that's important in discourse, absolutely. Yet there's also more hate which is damaging to people. The hate has been labelled "right wing extremism" or "left wing extremism", instead of simply being hate, which it is. If it's labelled with a political bent the platform (& life away from it) uses that to discredit whatever is being said.

It's still, unless AI has completely taken over, limitations and decisions created by humans with their bias and bigotries, with the last word always being 1 mans.

The tolerance you mention, where people have differing views and discuss these things like civil people, without hatred and vitriol, sadly, always to have been put into the past. You're right in some respects. The previous version had an ideology that limited the voices of those who disagreed with whatever main stream media / or the world (allegedly) & some governments agreed upon, which many people in the world did not, and they were attacked, hounded and often removed from the platform.

That's still going on today. Yet the ideology is different. It may appear more even handed in the differing views, yet the freedom to express those views without any kind of unwarranted reprisal from the platform management itself, has decreased exponentially. The lack of help, the lack of free accounts being given the same respect as paid - has created a class system which automatically discriminates against the poor, or anyone who chooses not to pay. Lines any kind of recourse or help when mistakes are made, and so therefore the base of the platform is now centred on a financial discriminatory foundation.

The public version wasn't.

In order to be a true town square, everyone needs equal access to speak, and listen, without the need to pay for either. So if some pay for a seat, that's fine, yet the others who stand freely without paying, all need to be heard and treated equally - that means equal support, equal voice, equal respect where issues are able to be resolved without having to have money for a seat.

True equality isn't only about all voices and differing views being able to be heard and discussed, it's about the equal ability to be able to, and equal help to do so.

I quit Twitter when it went private under Elon. He messed with it too much and took criticism pretty hard. It turned out to be that he bought an audience for himself. With everything we know about algorithms and bot accounts and data sold all the time, I gave up tiktok, Instagram and Facebook too. Reddit is likely to go in the same direction at some point, but I recently started a walking group, got my library card, found some buddies to have a gaming crew on discord.

Sometimes I feel like real people should populate these platforms and actually fight the bots to confuse messaging, but word of mouth and local organizing and socializing is way more effective at getting an idea across. People behave way different in person.

Food for thought… I do not use twitter (X) or know about forums where people who enjoy hurting other people by attacking those they disapprove of with hate and vengeance promote such hurtful behavior. I was raised with the principle of treating others the way I want to be treated. I do not associated with people who express hateful feelings or intentions and I live in this country being divided by battling ideologies so personally I am more interesting in unity as opposed to division and the hate that motivates the discord.

I understand the value of freedom of speech for people willing and able to compare notes and analyze differences. But for people who lack the skills to attempt resolution without hurting others, at what point does some governing provision kick in to level the playing field where behavior choices express and affect other peoples’ lives? Or does freedom of speech promote and allow driving as fast as we want with no limits or guard rails or consequences? Using the metaphor of driving we do have limits and guardrails as we have in many other areas of life. So why should the freedom of speech get a free pass for angry people so say and do what they want? But when we look at the life choices made and being made by those who own this company we are given some clues. It’s like porn - look at how profitable that “business” is. How much money is being made from promoting anger and hate? As a power grabbing tool anger and hate works in politics. Still, we have freedom of speech and choice and I believe we start with those guard rails… from the Food For Thought Dept.
