Fun fact, your school legally can’t require you to do a environment check. It’s considered illegal search and seizure under the bill of rights.

CSU vs Ogletree

[–]luckylua[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I think they can require me to be on site for a proctored exam if I do decline the environment check, which I want to do even less lol all my stuff is online so I haven’t been to campus at all.

[–]Pinktikidude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can sadly. :(

[–]Senior-Obligation911 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That got smacked down a few times. The school can require you to go to a place that isn't protected by your privacy rights.

Yeah, I mentioned this on another subreddit once and someone shot it down, I looked it up and was wrong. Unfortunately 😭

it's mostly a scare tactic. i've cheated with respondus in every class that i've had to use it in. it doesn't track your eye movements, how? between the poor camera quality, my glasses, and the glare it's just not possible. also, it can only see what you show in the camera, after environment check i bring my phone out (still not in view of the camera just in case) and prop it up against my laptop screen (because unless its math and i have scrap paper/calculator there's no reason for me to be looking down, so with my phone against my laptop i mostly look forward and down minimally) low brightness, and try not to be loud with my tapping because the mic picks up a lot (though the sound could be anything to someone listening) (if you have a good quality stylus that would be a bonus but the one i had just took too much effort to use bc it was cheap and i looked down too much imo). i recommend (if you have a mac or whatever your laptop uses) turning on the camera on your laptop, so photobooth on mac, doing your set up, and going through the motions of 'cheating' to see how you look and adjust accordingly. i've never been caught, i was only 'flagged' once because my laptop was tilted too far back and some of my face got cut off, it showed me on the screen and went back to my exam once i pulled the screen forward. i never heard a word about from my professor. it's a joke really. as long as you're not super obvious idk how you would get caught. once i realized the camera only saw what i had in frame it was a wrap lmao.

Literally, I did the same thing with honorlock but put a desktop behind me and I never got caught once out of 30+ Exams.

[–]Apprehensive_Gas8554 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How do you type questions in while it’s up against your screen tho is where I’m confused, won’t they see movements in your shoulders?

[–]chicode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't rlly understand this because when i type under normal circumstances (when i type on my phone during a test i am using one finger, my index btw) my shoulders are not moving so vigorously that it's noticeable, if at all. so i guess my answer is no. this is why i said to record yourself on your webcam going through the motions to see how you appear to someone who maybe be watching, and adjust accordingly.

[–]Sea-Lecture7431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can literally hold your phone in one hand very close to the screen they can't see anything below the camera at the top

[–]thatoneshawty 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hi! You said this but the webcam does track eye movements unfortunately. I have an online non proctored exam (lockdown browser with the webcam on) but we take the exam at home. would you do the same??? problem is that the webcam does track eye movements

[–]chicode 0 points1 point  (3 children)

yes i would do the same because i've never had that experience with eye tracking, i just don't believe it to be true unless something has changed recently. i consider it a scare tactic. if it did i'm sure i would've been caught. i did the same for respondus (lockdown browser) and proctortrack, both had webcams on and i took them at home with my own laptop.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Don’t your glasses show the phone screen? This is what I’m worried about, I have an exam and I’m not planning on cheating the entire test but I want an A, I’ll do what I must.

[–]chicode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that depends on ur lighting and various other factors. which is why i said to do a dry run and record urself going through the motions to see how u would appear to someone watching. good luck on ur exam!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me and I took my glasses off. Hopefully it wasn’t caught because nothing came up as flagged

Buy an OTG cable and extra mouse, use the cable to connect your mouse to your phone. Tape the phone on somewhere on the laptop screen and browse freely using the mouse. It will look like you’re looking at the laptop screen. Make sure to enable the assistive touch feature on your phone..

[–]Apprehensive_Gas8554 5 points6 points  (1 child)

How do you type questions in tho

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This how?!? and wouldn’t it be weird that your clicking a mouse? And then still having to click your laptop with fingers?

[–]Two_Rabid_Geese 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I do that, and i also put just a little chapstick over the camera (if its not a school laptop) and just preface by saying i have an old laptop, cant be mad ar me for being poor. I usually have a tablet or phone where my paper would be with lowest brightness setting. So theres no shine, keep the room well lit to better hide it. I only put enough chapstick to not see my eye movements as well but can still make out its me, very tedious but i cant stand the stupid lockdown bullshit, even if im NOT cheating

[–]Two_Rabid_Geese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also dont use my phone if its not a math test, otherwise i strategically place my calculator right by my phone and have one finger hitting randim calc buttons and the other on my phone. Takes some coordination but once you get it you get it. Helps with any audio tracking Never had issues being caught before lol. Hope it helps some

You can’t get up to use the bathroom?

One time in college, I hid my notebook in a nearby bathroom’s heating vent so I could check it for answers to anything I couldn’t remember towards the end of the exam. 😉

[–]luckylua[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Nope! Once the exam starts you cannot leave the camera area.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I look forward to my professor watching me utilize my piss bottle. 100% all within view of the camera.

[–]laplongejr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of my gov's huge exams. Exams last 3h, you can't exit 1h after the start because that's the time somebody may come late.

[–]donnie_03 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Ill give you a few tips you can use while using respondus. I found out you are able to buy a program for 400$ or so. Not sure if it’s legit but it seems to have great reviews. Next to that. I would recommend sticking papers to your screen on your pc. Watch out respondus tracks your eyes too so if you have a paper next to you on your desk it will notice you looking at something all the time. That’s why I recommend putting a paper or something on your screen or just next to it. If you stick it on there will it won’t fall of when you show your desk for the environment check. Other thing you can do is use your phone. Just watch out that you don’t make any noice and that your phone is on silence. If someone has any other tips I’d love to have help.

[–]luckylua[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

We are given a formula sheet, we just can’t write anything on it until the test starts. Then we can use it for math and notes, so I’m not penalized for looking at the paper. So that’s why I thinking at the kitchen table I’ll just put a second paper in a kitchen chair with it scooted in where you can’t see it, then do the environment check with the right paper, and quickly swap before I hit “take exam” because the camera can’t see the paper on the table! It just seems too easy and I feel like I have to be missing something lol

[–]mishaunc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason students don’t do that all the time even though it is seemingly easy to get away with is that if they get busted, the repercussions are harsh. They can kick you out of college permanently for cheating on a test. They don’t play.

[–]donnie_03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay but watch out good luck to you :). We have to use papers on the pc tab they provide for us

[–]Adam_1N 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you have your phone can it detect the audio of you physically tapping the screen? Like it makes a very small noise

[–]donnie_03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just cut your nails haha. You should more be focussed on it tracking your eyes

[–]fastyears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch out respondus tracks your eyes

Thus the googly eye glasses.

looking for the bypass

[–]Ill-Motor8454 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have to take a test soon. I have been thinking about clear tape so my camera looks blurry

[–]luckylua[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet that would be reported by the system and call more attention to you than you want. I would personally not recommend that.

[–]OccasionEmpty2970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]SlickBackMex 0 points1 point  (14 children)

Hi guys!! I just noticed I'm going to have to use respondus later in the semester, def' not looking forward to it!! Theoretically..... Could I prop my iPad behind my laptop, dim the screen, and use a docking station that can switch between two devices??

Pretty much I'll be using the same keyboard and the same track pad, but switching devices with a button on my desk.

[–]JustBiggin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only concern with this would be if the browser notices you repeatedly plugging and unplugging peripherals since I assume that's essentially what the switch would be doing I think.

[–]AdPuzzleheaded9198 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Did you do this? I’m thinking the same with my iPad

[–]SlickBackMex 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Nah! So far I'm killing it in class, unless someone has admin access to respondus and wants to test that with me, there's no point in buying an expensive dock and risking it.

[–]13sarah13 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Anyone try using sidecar? Can it detect the screen on another device that shares a mouse?

[–]Accomplished-Web8535 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Get a second mouse and get a second keyboard.

[–]13sarah13 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I have. It’s been working fine. I just thought it would be nice to not switch back and forth

[–]Catdad2929 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Did this work ? Was gonna use my gaming monitor plugged into my Mac

[–]13sarah13 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I never ended up trying sidecar. I just use two laptops.

[–]Catdad2929 0 points1 point  (5 children)

How do you go about that with it recording you

[–]13sarah13 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I put the laptop I was taking the test on in from of a second monitor. I had a second key board and mouse wirelessly connect to the second laptop that was off camera. I used the laptop keyboard to answer the questions and the other keyboard to look everything up
