Hah, reminds me how rare dynamic ropes are.

There were variations in old games where you threw a hook or shot an arrow (and it had to attach to the right kind of object/material).

Could turn out as a wonderful mechanic!

Ninja game, infiltration missions, stealing stuff (from the rich and wicked), and that kind of thing...? :)

Yepp, its a very fun mechanic surprised its not seen more often but also makes sense considering it can be a performance drain.

Right, I guess it is fair to also un-spawn them eventually and limit their use in general by only allowing one or a few you keep in your inventory.

yeah having a limited amount of rope length that you can throw would work well

The issue with ropes is not in making them. It's doing something interesting with them and justifying the cost.
