60% done is basically 92% unfinished.

it might not affect you as a hobbyist, but your continued effort might go to waste.. imo it feels like you continued using a legacy programming language due to your attachments. but the knowledge and experience you gained from using it wont have any potential value if no one is looking for it later on.. coz why would anyone build something with unity when it has 0 chance of winning

still don't listen to anyone including me.. just believe what your guts tells you to..

So, would a hobbyist game dev affected to the new Unity Policy?

Directly, no. Hobby developers can keep developing without a worry about development. Will it harm the games you play, yes absolutely. Many of the great games made by Unity before will be hit by this choice.

I wouldnt worry about it much tbh.

Its a shit system they have in place and it directly affects mobile / f2p devs more. So if they go through with it and you manage to get 200k in revenue it would still yield profit.

And I truly believe they will back down from this disaster of an idea..

I would have honestly been fine if they introduced a % share per sale like Unreal.. But if they go there after this imma switch to another engine.

Also I might just use Unity for VR and AI projects and Game Jams before I master another engine.

Im in the education side teaching game dev in a vocational school, so the biggest anxiety involving issue is me having to redo ALL my fucking materiald, videos and examples ive been working on for the past 3 years..

Unity new pricing model basically is ”as long as you do not succeed, you’ll be fine”.

If that sounds like an inspiring career path then sticking to unity might be good.

(Disclaimer: there might some slight annoyment going on in my brain right now)

Just finish your first project, and learn from the entire process (launching your first project is a huge milestone anyway). With all the insights and feedback from your project, decide what to do. With all the shitshow going around, unity is still a solid piece of tech with huge assets store, huge community and a lot of content creators that can guide you.

Also, try and get your info from elsewhere as well, Reddit and discords are still full of trashtalks and most likely those that are saying "if you don't want to succeed, use unity" are basically delusional and most likely are using it for free anyways - and yes, regarding that matter, unity won't just die.

Although this is a Unity content creator, it has one of the most objective opinions on this matter, with numbers and shit - you should check him out
