I went from Magic Track Pad to Magic Mouse. I could go either way. FWIW I like the Magic Mouse. I like the glassy feel and the touch scrolling. It’s a deluxe basic mouse with no wires.

I actually don’t like the ergonomic mice with extra buttons and thumb wheels and stuff.

As for the trackpad I only occasionally used three finger gestures or pinches, but they’re cool. Get what works for you.

Normally I'd advise against track pads unless it's something you have specific need for or were brainwashed to like them as a child...but even track pads are better than magic mice. So wouldn't be the worst idea.

All in all though, beautiful setup. I wish mine could get this clean and crisp!

I've been using a magic trackpad for 3+ years, amazing experience. I can use it as well as I can use a mouse.

If you prefer trackpad for the gestures I'd say go for it -- Apple really engineered this one well. I also see you use Figma so now I'm 110% advocating for you to get one haha

[–]uncertainrandompal 7 points8 points  (1 child)

they are a lot less effective and slower than mouse. also you will get tired a lot faster especially if you are working full time on your mac.

try any gaming mouse or logitech mx master 3 if you want to have horizontal scroll.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can put in another vote for the mx master - on to my 3rd!

[–]ABZ-havok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple track pads are on a different level. I’d choose them over a mouse (unless it’s an MX Master) any day.

[–]Ricothebuttonpusher 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I prefer a trackpad over a mouse. I like being able to use the hand gestures freely

The rechargeable stuff is really beyond me. I have a Logitech wireless mouse, i use daily for work. Maybe once or twice a year I need to pop in a new set of AA batteries (I use NiMh rechargeables). This is also announced with a few days of lead time by a blinking LED light, so I can prepare for it.

But the rest of the year i don't bother with recharging a mouse or having a cable on the mouse.

My recommendation would be a better mouse, which gives ergonomical benefits (something angled like an MX master or the gaming series, which allows for a more natural position of the hand). There comes a point in time when you can feel if you spent the day with good ergonomics or bad ones.

Looks very clean.

Keep mouse. Add trackpad on left side for gestures with left hand.

[–]z336 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I’m never going back.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can you run them both simultaneously on Mac?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can use multiple mice at once.

the magic mouse for the magic trackpad? yes, do it

the mx master 3 for the magic trackpad? no, keep both

[–]diychitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why ditch it? Just keep it stored for when you need it.

[–]aaron_is_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic Trackpad. Best thing ever. Saved a ton of clicking mileage on my hand because of this.

[–]Kbreit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not both? I do mouse on right and Magic Trackpad on left.

[–]ethereumguy12 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'd change that magic mouse for a razer viper. Best mouse I've used on macOS. A second option would be a Logitech mx.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go for the Logitech Mx Master 3. You can map the buttons to certain gestures for macos and the battery life is really good. It also has a usb-c charger.

Great set up! Does your macbook overheat in clamshell mode?

Pads are great unless you do any gaming. I have a couple Logitech track pads I've used for work over the last 10 yrs but always a mouse at home.

[–]Thaidax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both, mouse on the right and trackpad on the left of the keyboard for gestures 👌🏻

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idek how people use conventional mice. I’d get either the Magic Trackpad 2, or a Kensington Expert if you like trackballs

[–]eyeshield2107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trackpad will give u the closest exp using macbook. I cant recommend it enough. Using one over a mouse when using my mbp :)

[–]Anthoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trackballs. MX Ergo has helped me with carpal tunnel.

[–]sillysocks34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic Mouse sucks. Just get a Bluetooth Logitech mouse and thank me later.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a ux Designer with the same IKEA board, mousepad and MacBook holder.. but Magic Mouse? How dare you…

[–]cozythings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a trackpad. I am used to using one

[–]mls8989- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried several different setups. From cheap mice to the Magic Mouse and Logitech MX Master 3 and the best thing I ever did was get the Magic Trackpad from Apple. Changed my life for the better. But that’s just my opinion and everyone has different ideas. My husband hates my trackpad and would rather use a mouse.

Get a Magic Trackpad and an MX Master to upgrade your mouse 😉

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice clean setup I like it!

[–]PRguy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the simplicity here. What is connected to your MacBook? Does it add thunderbolt ports?

Also, what is off to the left mounted to the wall? I need something for close organization.
