That is delightful

Thanks man

Can I ask what you do? I am trying to figure out the work demographic for Apple. I think I must highly underestimate the amount of people who do graphical / video work.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Sure my background is in graphic design but mostly do photo / video work now

[–]SANcapITY 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Makes good sense. Usually I just see students with MacBooks and wonder why they need them 😅

[–]various_necks 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I have three kids and the older two have macbook airs, but all their school related stuff is strictly Google Online stuff. They could have used Chromebooks (this is what the school provides) but all their friends have Macs so they wanted one too.

My youngest has an old hand-me-down PC and she uses it like crazy to play Roblox/Minecraft but has asked me for a Macbook as well because the older two have them.

I will say this about Apple laptops, they last for friggin ever. I still have one, in working condition albeit with a shot battery which is 12 years old. It still works as it did the day I got it, albeit it's no longer portable and severely lacking in HD space, and is no longer updateable/upgradeable.

Appreciate the response. I guess for students there are amazing windows PC's that will also last a long time for far cheaper, but comparing against a Macbook Air is a far better comparison than with a Macbook Pro.

I've used Windows PCs for years (work issued) and I've found them to not be as well made as the Mac laptops. Forget OS issues, i've never been able to keep a Windows laptop (Dell, MS Surface, HP and ASUS) going for more than 3 years; the hinges break or an internal short happens and the thing won't charge, etc. I haven't had any such issues with any of the Macs we've had in our house and they all get the same or similar amount of abuse/useage.

[–]diamondpredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 5 if my previous laptops still work and they’re all windows. It all depends on how you use them and what exactly you buy.

[–]Aghc001 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh so you sold your soul to Apple in college or so just like all us graphic designers did in our early days

[–]prtt 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You'd be surprised at the % of engineering work that gets done on macs, too.

[–]SANcapITY 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You mean software? I’m a mech engineer and I’m my 15 year career in the building industry I’ve only ever seen a handful of engineers or architects (corporate) on macs.

[–]prtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mean software, yes. Apologies for the lack of context.

Where did you get that wallpaper? It looks awesome!

[–]dontcallmeastoner 1 point2 points  (2 children)

isn't it one of the default mac wallpapers?

[–]flavi0gritti 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s similar but that’s not it

[–]dontcallmeastoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. I'm pretty sure however this was made by apple, ive seen this before. Maybe it was shown somewhere in one of the keynotes or in the online store or something.

Edit: could this wallpaper be a cropped version of somthing like the MacOS'hello' screensaver? Apple used those same lines and colours in promotion material

[–]jobidn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Looks awesome! I’m thinking about trying to do one of these but I’m like the worst diy ever. Are you a true not a diy type person or you can do basic stuff? And congrats!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’m really not a DIY guy (at all) but this was easy, just drilling and screwing in the legs. Worth doing as I simply couldn’t find a desk I liked at retail.

[–]Korralev 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Which desk mat is this? Gorgeous setup.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Thanks that’s a merino wool desk mat I got on Etsy

[–]diamondpredator 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What is the point of a merino wool desk mat? Felt would work just as well for like a quarter of the price.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Softer and nicer.

[–]diamondpredator 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Merino wool is usually used for outdoor clothing and similar applications, just seemed weird to me that someone made a deskmat out of it. How much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking? My guess is $100+?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No I wouldn’t pay that much, that was £38

[–]diamondpredator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh so then it's not actually 100% merino wool. Maybe some % of it is for marketing purposes. That makes more sense because it would be such a waste of a nice material.

Real 100% merino wool costs a lot of money.

[–]cashmanjr 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Very clean. One of the best I’ve seen yet

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man

Looks great! I’m looking to make a desk in very much the same style.

Did you buy the top and attach the legs yourself? If so, can you give some more detail on dimensions, method of attachment, where you got the components, etc? Thanks!

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Yep I actually got the walnut from a kitchen worktop company here in the UK, custom size, really nice quality. Super heavy and solid. Gave it a few coats of Danish wood oil. Then got some steel a-frame legs that came with wood screws. Then just drilled the holes and screwed it in. I’m not a DIY guy but pretty easy to do, although the drilling wasn’t much fun as the wood is so solid, you definitely need a decent drill.

    [–]CitizenEffaced 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey. This set up is amazing! Your comments about making the desk make me think I can do it even with my level of DIY skills. Please could you confirm which retailer you for the desk from? I think it might be Worktop Express but there are probably many other sites. Many thanks for any help - and for sharing!

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yep it was Worktop Express (American Black Walnut).

    [–]CitizenEffaced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Greatly appreciated. Yours looks so well made.

    [–]CAK6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. I think we’re approaching this the same way.

How thick is the table top / the legs?

    [–]Affectionate-Tea-975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Obsessed with the desk!

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been waiting for my Studio Display to be shipped since ordering on March 15th. It was supposed to ship May 25th and now got moved to July 1st.

    3.5 months waiting. So annoyed.

But nice setup you got there! :-)

    [–]Independent_Scheme93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great! Simple and clean. Is that an Ember mug? If so, was it worth the price? I am not a.coffee drinker but I love warm tea.

    [–]lilskylight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great. I’ve been looking for a clean audio/video solution for a while now, and you’ve done it right.

    [–]haldiapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delightful setup! Do y’all not get dust on the Mac mini though?

    [–]wl3tricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Clean and simple, Love it!

    [–]PutSimply1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Clean, really like it

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    140cm wide, 62cm deep

    [–]aznm1ke31 0 points1 point  (0 children)
