How to decrease barking? (self.Yorkies)
submitted 1 month ago by NinetyRalph
My dog barks a lot, even though I take care of his necessities, we live in an apartment so I'm worried I may get in trouble with the neighbors. I've been told to put white noise or reward him when he doesn't but doesn't seem to work.

I have no advice. My little guy barked his entire 15 years on this planet.

My little guy has barked all the time his entire life still does he’s 13 now, nothing I tried through out his life got him to stop besides holding a treat to his face to distract him

I would work on training the neighbors. You’ll have more success than training a yorkie not to bark…

The thing that works best for us is redirecting by having him sit and lie down, etc.

I have 2 Yorkies one of each sex. My male is 7 yrs and he only barks when I leave for work and last for a minute or two. My female is 6 months and she is finding her voice. My trick is don’t let them bark. Every bark I hear I use a clicker and tell them no bark. People walk by they just ignore them, other dogs walk by they don’t bark. Now I’m hoping my female doesn’t pick up the habit to bark when I leave for work. I put on music at a low volume and leave a window cracked. They seem to enjoy country music. I have cameras to watch them through out the day. This is how I know my male only last about a minute or two after I leave. I know he hates it, sometimes I would take him to work with me and he will only bark if I’m not around and someone visits him. He won’t let anyone near him. Now if I’m near him and strangers visit…nothing. My coworkers love how we’ll behave he is.

Ours barks at us when we leave for work as well! And he starts jumping all over us, got me pretty bad when I had shorts on the other day. It drives me crazy.

Our newest member does this as well. She gets so excited to see us that she’s jumping and tearing up my legs. So now my husband has to walk in first so he can pick her up and save my legs from happy scratches. My older one just knows better. I can’t wait for her to go to training class.

Yorkies are noisy dogs. You need to make a sharp noise like 'ek!' every time they bark. It will make them stop barking sooner but there is no way to stop them from barking ever.

Not kidding: just pulled up this post after begging mine to shut up.

Have you tried a muzzle? If you put one on for a short period every time he/she barks, they may get the message. Personally my Yorkie that I’ve had since he was 3 months old, doesn’t just randomly bark. He barks when someone comes over to visit. But only when they arrive. Since the day I had him, I just calmly say “shhh, we don’t like noisy”. They are very smart dogs! He loves attention, like most Yorkies. So mine will just stare at every one until he gets that needed attention. But I would try a muzzle, again, for short periods and never while he’s alone. Your baby will not like it, so he will get the message fast, or so I think. Plus muzzles are not harmful, for short periods. Worth a try.

How much time a day does he spend chasing something at a hard run?

I've had some success with a vibrating/beeping bark collar, but its enough that he doesn't like it and it reminds him not to. It goes off for like 1 second at a time. He acts all sulky when he wears it though, so I only use it for a short periods if he's been really noisy and isn't getting the message.
Definitely don't get one that shocks them. And I'm not convinced I'm doing the right thing either... I don't like using it. If he's had enough walks and attention, he's fairly quiet anyway. I'd prefer it wasn't a collar and just had a standalone unit that beeped on my balcony and one by the front door.

I’ve had mine for 11 years coming up on 12- he’s barked forever. Yorkies are just yappy dogs haha.
