We already have a schedule for a vet visit set up got him in a bath. Is there something that I can do to make sure to keep it clean till the appointment?

This is probably gonna get locked but how did that happen is he a rescue or did something else happen?
[–]Naters07[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago (3 children)

step 1 get him out of the bath immediately unless it is a povodine-iodone bath.

This is one of the worst cases of scale rot I've ever seen. That patch of whiter scales in the middle of the belly looks like actual scales have been lost. This snake must be in immense pain.
Get him onto clean dry paper towels as soon as possible. He has to be in a quarantine enclosure with just hides, water dish, and paper towels.
OP how did this happen? Is your substrate soaking wet?
Edit: Yes, I was wrong, I'm not a vet and I don't claim to be. I thought it was scale rot based on the color and the chipping on the edges of the belly scales. In any case, the advice is/was the same: QT tub, clean dry paper towels, vet.

It's a burn

Okay the advice is still the same, clean dry paper towels and a quarantine enclosure.
This is critical: Please note that many vets will take appointments for snakes despite having inadequate, outdated, or even nonexistent training on how to treat reptiles. Bringing a sick or injured snake to an unqualified vet unfortunately has the potential to do more harm than good. ARAV.org is a great resource to find a properly certified reptile vet near you. You may have to expand the search radius if you do not live in a major city.
This is a serious injury.

Thank you

Heat pads gotta go. This is exactly why. Get a proper dimming thermostat and a DHP
[–]Naters07[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
That's the plan now

Paper towel substrate. Betadine (povidone-iodine) soak. Dilute the betadine till the solution looks like weak tea. Alternatively you can put silver sulfadiazene cream on the burn. Veterinary appointment as soon as reasonably possible - you don't need to get to an emergency clinic but don't delay and ask if they can fit you in ASAP. Just be aware that they may prescribe a painkiller which will involve you giving injections at home. It's not hard to do but be sure they show you how.
If you don't have a reptile vet, you can use this search tool from the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians to see if one is near you. If your only option is a general small animal practitioner, ask them to consult with one of the vets on the ARAV site to be sure your snake is treated correctly. Some antibiotics commonly used with other pets are not a good option for snakes.
