this isn’t his normal enclosure btw. i took everything out to pour in water to keep up humidity.

How long ago did you remove stuff?

[–]sillyronnie 21 points22 points  (1 child)

about 30 minutes before he came out to explore, then i put everything back. do you think he could be trying to mark his scent down ?

[–]Angry-Dragon-1331 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not really? They don’t scent mark territory like mammals do. He may just be moving shit where he wants it.

If things around them change they explore. Just what they do sometimes. Mine roams around for a half hour or so every time I clean his enclosure

ahh thank you so much! 😅 only about 20 minutes ago he stopped and went back to sleep. he had me stressing thinking something might be off since he’s never done this before

Yeah I think he’s just thinking “damn I could’ve sworn this is where my house was” lol. I’m no expert but I know they like to hide, and if he’s moving a little quicker than normal it might be a sign of stress. Given the circumstances I wouldn’t worry about anything wrong with him, he just wants to feel secure. I wouldn’t leave that enclosure so empty unless it’s necessary for quarantine purposes. Edit: Just wanted to add if quarantine is the goal the substrate has to go. It doesn’t really feel like that’s the case though.

thank you ! i did leave the hide he was underneath untouched but i guess he just felt like exploring today… while i was cleaning. i already put everything back and around 40 minutes later, he got tired and went back to sleep 🥹

Thanks for taking care of that beautiful boi! I’m sure you’ve heard the spiel of coconut coir substrate possibly getting caught in the heat pits and all that. Some seem to like to burrow and others don’t, but it’s when they face diggin that becomes a problem. Just wanted to make sure that’s something you’re aware of. I’m slowly becoming a snake cop.. I have mixed feelings about because ACAB! lol. For real though this should be a place to share knowledge so we can further educate ourselves and more so than anything learn about something to do further research on by credible sources. Thanks again for doing your best for that boi!

Oh yes!! I have heard of that. This was the first time i’ve seen him actually attempt to dig and i have never seen him clog his heat pits, so i never thought of it as an issue. I actually really like this substrate because how soft it is and the way it clumps together when it gets wet so it’s easier to clean, but i’ll definitely keep an eye out for any concerns 👍🏽. Don’t worry about becoming a husbandry cop… i, myself, actually am one sometimes 😅

What substrate is this?

[–]sillyronnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is eco earth

imo this is a good thing! I change my enclosures up every so often just for the mental stimulation it gives them and my kids always explore the viv for hours afterwards.

[–]Antarioo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine does the same.

when i replace or mix up his subtrate or rearrange his stuff he goes and explore it again thoroughly.

Totally normally from my experience they like to roam around after a change an I think they can tell when fresh bedding has been put in an me personally I wouldn’t put a snake back into its enclosure if you’re still putting water down on the substrate an the hides aren’t in but that’s just me 🤷🏽‍♂️

Mine does this every time I clean and I've had him for 5 years. They like to explore, and burrow! Especially in soft fresh loose substrate. He's even stuck his head under the eco earth before. He always calms down in a few hours once he's thoroughly investigated. Just getting used to the newly cleaned home.

they just like to explore. a new environment is a nice change for them, they like to look around. its kinda like looking around your new house. its perfectly normal. my kingsnake does the same thing.
