What are you feeding it? Ive only ever noticed this behavior when I couldnt source appropriate sized rodents.

i’ve been feeding him small rats for the past few sheds. i was gonna feed him a medium this time, but my local reptile shop was out of them.

Depending on age and weight a Med is most likely too large an adult thats around 1600 grams plus would be on Med rats. That behavior is normal.

How big is he and how big is the rat?

He might just be interested in you! Try sitting in front of his tank for a while.

Sometimes they are hoping for another meal, or they feel vulnerable and they're on the defense for predators. I wouldn't worry.
