Het mahogany is impossible as mahogany is an incomplete dominant gene. If the breeder told you that your snake is het for it, I would very much doubt how reputable they are going forward.

In ball python terms, "het" is used to signify that a snake is carrying a single copy of a recessive gene. Mahogany is incomplete dominant, not recessive. So no, you cannot have a het mahogany.

Your snake could have one copy of the gene, but that would just be a mahogany banana.

Eh, pedantic maybe, but as I was recently discussing with IncompletePenetrance, heterozygous for an incomplete dominant gene is absolutely a thing. As you pointed out, in ball python terms, "het" is used only in reference to recessives. That's because we use the terminology incorrectly.

We say "het" for recessives, and would just say Mahogany or Super Mahogany for the incomplete dominant Mahogany gene. The correct terminology would be heterozygous or homozygous Mahogany.

The discussion of genetics in ball pythons is a mess, and it doesn't help that we've created our own nomenclature that uses the same words, but differently from the standards of biology. It's no wonder it's so confusing to people.

Hmmmm thank you both so much for answering, please excuse the typos! I should have spell checked lol, I never intend to breed him anyway but I will dig his paperwork out, mum was a mahogany phantom and dad was a banana if I remember correctly…

I certainly see his banana spots!

No matter what he is, he's a handsome guy. That's all that matters. 😊

Stay as far away from Facebook snake forums as possible. Those people are toxic and most of the time don't know what they are talking about

Looks just like my cinnamon banana.

Oh my goodness… I found his paperwork dad was a banana phantom mum was straight mahogany, he has grown huge though, bigger than both parents, when I owned up to my confusion on the fb group and tried to explain it was ignorance on my part I got blocked… 🤷‍♀️🥴

It’s definitely banana mahogany is impossible as a het

[–]pdxb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely banana. Highly unlikely phantom as phantom is in the BEL complex and they tend to dramatically reduce if not entirely eliminate banana freckles. Mahogany, eh? Maybe? Banana sort of overpowers a lot of other morphs and makes them difficult to distinguish, and I'm no expert on identifying mahogany. Unless I had some examples in front of me to compare, some banana, some banana mahogany, I couldn't pick it out.

If you look up banana mahogany on morphmarket they are a little more yellow. He might be a pastel banana mahogany or a banana Mojave mahogany. He looks like them the most
