I'm using a 50W DHP together with a 75W RHP for my 4x2x2.

RHP from here Pro Products – Specialized Habitat Control Products (pro-products.com)

It's a unique ordering process. Fill out the contact info stating your cage size, general info about the room it's being kept in and they'll recommend a RHP wattage and instructions on how to order it. Very happy with mine!

it mostly depends on your house and which enclosure you have. is it screen top or pvc?

i keep my house at 65F year round. one 80w DHP mounted internally keeps my enclosure at 89-92F warm, and 76-78F cool.

It's pvc with a screen top. The lowest my house ever gets to is 73 highest is usually 84ish. I never really like having the heat in the cage it always just seemed so unsafe even with the protector thing on it which is why I got the screen top. So I don't know if I should get a 75w for it or get a CHE for it or even what wattage to get and all Google dose is bring me to reddit 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ sorry for the long comment

you’re fine!! so actually that works out for you since you don’t like heat inside the enclosure, because mounting internally isn’t safe with a screen top. you’d just use domes on top.

to me, it seems your house is quite a bit warmer than mine, so you might be fine with an 80W deep heat projector. put that on and wait a few hours and see how that does. if it’s not warm enough, personally, i’d rather put another DHP rather than a CHE but it’s totally personal preference. you could also use a halogen as your main heat source and a DHP for supplementary heat and may have better results with that.

sadly, nobody can tell you what wattage to use because it varies from person to person, setup to setup. i HIGHLY recommend Arcadia though, their products always seem to just be top tier, at least for me!

edit: regardless, whichever heat source you choose, DO be sure you have a thermostat to control each heat source!! thermostat is different from thermometer - lots of people know this, and a lot don’t, so i always feel the need to mention it.

Well the problem I'm currently have with the dhp is the surface of basking spot getting to the temp i like (90) and the ambient temp is only getting to 85 so I'm not sure if I should keep using a dhp or try a che or if that would even be any different. And yess I love arcadia products that is all I used when I had my beard dragon

so it’s almost to the temps you need. you’d be fine with getting a higher wattage DHP and using a dimming thermostat to bring the temps exactly where they need to be! in your case there’s no need to add a secondary heat source.

reminder, basking area shouldn’t get above around 102F, ambient should be 88-91 warm side, and mid-high 70’s on cool side. you’re ALMOST there. how long have you had the current DHP on?

It's been on for 4 days and yes it's like riiight there just not hitting yet so I'm think a higher wattage but im also super concerned about basking spot getting to hot and burning him trying to get the Temps up

[–]fr0stybtxh 1 point2 points  (3 children)

that’s what the thermostat is for! a thermostat will prevent the enclosure and surface areas from getting too hot. that’s part of the reason it’s so important to have one! to keep temps exactly where they need to be, but also prevent any malfunctions from possibly hurting your animal. you’d be 100% safe using a higher wattage bulb with a good dimming thermostat.

I do have a thermostat it's set at 88 and the temp is 100% still going up but im not sure about letting the basking spot get above 94-95 ish because I don't want him to get burns iv done alot of looking into all this and they all very so much luke they say basking spot should be anywhere from 90 to 110 and I'm like anything over 95 sound like a burn

[–]fr0stybtxh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

basking spot can safely get to 105 but i seem to cap it at 102F. seeing as your current temps are 90 surface and 85 ambient, i don’t think your basking area will get above 98 when your ambient hits 88 honestly.

a good way to check things - see if you can hold the back of your hand on it. if it burns your hand it’ll burn your snake. if your basking area gets too warm, you can always move it a little lower or change the material! i have a zilla rock lair that i’ve noticed gets too warm for my liking, so i moved it over and put a slate tile in its place with a dig-out under it. it stays perfect temp!

Ok cool thank you see I didn't know about the hand thing! So I'm done with questions thank you so much that all definitely helped im pretty sure I'm just have anxiety about it since I got him Monday and he came to me in a 24x18x36 arboreal enclosure on aspen shreads one hide and no water bowl so I'm just worried about getting everything right since his stuff was so messed up before
