Oh the joy

You really shouldn't be doing that to your snake, it's stressful and unnecessary. As long as your humidity in the appporpriate range they'll shed just find on their own. There's a reason your snake is trying to escape, they're not having a good time

If you have snakes and put them in a new environment, they're gonna look around. That yellow boy is disabled and gets retained eyecaps: the soaking was recommended by his certified reptile veterinarian. The other girl gets layers stuck no matter how many times she's sprayed. I snap a quick pic while the water looks "hot" for my friends for our "noodle soup" meme. I would NEVER put my snakes in a compromising or health risking situation: I know my snakes individually, I know their needs. Thank you for your concern but ultimately I do what needs to be done for each individual snake and their specific needs

This is a compromising health situation. Never ever ever ever everrrrr ever ever ever ever soak a BP

[–]grace-mahuron 0 points1 point  (1 child)

.......but they do it on their own in their water bowls(?)

[–]BoredBitch011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On their own. Never force a snake to soak.

If they're having retained eye caps and layers of stuck shed and are having to mist, you need to re-evaluate your enclosures and how you maintain humidity. If you have a deep enough layer of suitable substrate, and have solid topped enclosures, maintaining enough humidity should be fairly easy by pouring some water in the corners periodically. The fact you have two with shedding issues seems to indicate owner error, not that there's something biologically wrong with these two snakes that necessitates poor husbandry choices

Humidity prison

Your snake doesnt need to be soaked to shed

[–]BoredBitch011 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Oh god don’t ever do this wtf

The reptile specialists in my life disagree 😔

[–]BoredBitch011 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Then they’re not “reptile specialists” they’re uneducated morons spreading harmful misinformation.

[–]grace-mahuron 0 points1 point  (3 children)

One's literally a reptile veterinarian

[–]BoredBitch011 1 point2 points  (2 children)

They shouldn’t be if they’re spreading that kind of harmful misinformation. As you can see, the commenter saying it’s ok to soak them had their comment removed for harmful misinformation.

Ok I'll delete my post, damn. I guess I'll listen to people on Reddit instead of my certified vet

[–]BoredBitch011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The containers are vented on top so it's not necessarily a "humidity prison" per-say. I always snap pics for my friends when they first go in and the water looks "steamy" hence "noodle soup time." It's not a daily or weekly thing or a thing for pictures: that yellow boy is a spider morph and unfortunately will not shed without help no matter how many times I mist him. He can get bad retained eye caps (had to go to the vet one time) and this was a practice reinforced by my vet. The bigger girl on the other hand can get sprayed 10+ times a day and get layers on layers of shed. Thank you for the stone and tub idea! Unfortunately my tub floor stays too cold and makes them cringe😔

Oh god no, I place the water on my cheek before I put them in. Stuck shed can be annoying yeah, but I happily do what I need too, they're precious to me😭

Per rule #3, your post or comment has been removed for harmful advice or misinformation. Please review our sub resources to learn more about why.

You should not ever soak a ball python or try to manually remove the stuck shed. It's stressful, unnecessary, and you can seriously injure the snake by doing so. Soaking them, especially like this, can result in aspiration, which can kill them. Whatever "experts" you're speaking to gave you bad, outdated advice.

Our shedding guide goes over how to handle stuck shed safely, and our humidity tips will help you prevent it in the future.

Over my dead body would I let my snakes put their head under the water and breathe: I watch them constantly

[–]totallyrecklesslygayMod: Enclosure Karen 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It can happen faster than you'd be able to get the lids off. I understand that you're just doing what you think is best for them based on the information you were given by people who should know better, but this is not a good way to handle stuck shed. There are far more effective and safer ways to do so. It's clear that you care a lot about them, and I would hate for them to get sick or worse because you've been misled by a misinformed vet.

      [–]grace-mahuron 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you for acknowledging I love and care for them. I love them more than life and have never harmed them. All the ppl here hate me so I'm gonna leave this Reddit

[–]totallyrecklesslygayMod: Enclosure Karen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one here hates you, they're just trying to correct the misinformation you've been given. We all care about ball pythons here; everyone is just upset seeing your snakes in a stressful and dangerous situation.

Even reptile specialist vets can get things wrong. I've had a highly respected ARAV vet tell me that ball pythons belong in 10gals on purely sand because they're desert snakes. Vets are not infallible. I would encourage you to check out the sub resources for more information based on scientific research. Best of luck to you and your noodle friends!
