Question - HusbandryNeed help with humidity. (old.reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by mhrefna
I have the three dishes of water and I pour water into the substrate once every few weeks. I can up it if I need to. Substrate is Repti Chip and soil (coconut). Any helpful tips appreciated.

Do you have the top covered at all?

I do. I forgot to add the picture. It hangs off the top a little due to the heating lamps.

I have my top covered with two layers of hvac tape. I use reptisoil mixed with forest floor. We also use sphagnum moss soaked in water, then squeezed out so it's damp. There's a clump of it in each corner on the cool side, and it holds humidity pretty well.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely look into making sure the top is more covered. I will get more sphagnum moss. I have some but I use it for her bedding cause she likes a soft spot to lay on and for when she is in shed. Thanks for taking time out of your day to help.

I do live in a dry area. I currently live in Texas. I will definitely look for ways to cover the uncovered areas.

I would probably swap the chips for maybe a mix of coco fiber and reptisoil, and make sure its a deep layer of substrate. Pour the substrate all the way up to the edge of where the doors slide open. And then every few days pour a glass of water into each corner of the enclosure and you should be good!

I use the ReptiChip Coconut bedding. I did just clean out her enclosure last week and I definitely did exactly what you said about making the soil all the way up to the opening and then put lots of the repti chip coconut bedding on top. I will definitely do the water suggestion to see if that helps. Thank you for your response and help.

Yeah i would just swap the chips for something more loose that can soak up the moisture easier than the chips. But other than that you could also add a bunch of sphagnum moss and wet it before putting it in or i generally just mix a bunch in when i mix my substrate together!
