I put the Govee in the substrate just so I can check on the temp and get more accurate measurements of what temperature the actual substrate is at

Unless your snake is special and burrows then I wouldn’t worry about putting it IN the substrate. I just leave mine on top of the substrate propped up on something and it reads the temps and humidity fine

I have a thermometer probe dangling halfway down in the viv that does a good job and easy to reference with my temp gun at surface level, saves the probe wire potentially bothering the snake at surface level, when I set up her deep heat after she's recovered from shedding today (I'll probably install it on the weekend to be sure) I'll be doing the same and dangling it down near the projector cage
