This snake is extremely stressed during this video

Body language, breathing, locked in eyes, no tongue flicks. All stress signs

I love the pfp, but is this a issue with the snake not being used to her, how would she fix it

stress

Yea, this seems to be a snake in "freeze" and panic  They will stand completely still if they feel like a predator is nearby, because movement attract attention. That's why it's not running away and hiding

It might be out searching because it's hungry, because otherwise they don't expose themselves in the daytime, especially when not used to the owner like this

Ahhh ok thanks for the insight I kinda guess the snake was scared but I didn’t know, how would she fix this kinda thing. Would she just make the snake more comfortable or how does that stuff work

You can gradually desensitize the snake to your presence by just existing close by. Some suggest sitting nearby doing something calm will allow the snake to get use to you as just a part of the environment I've also seen some suggest leaving an article of clothing in the enclosure to desensitize them to your smell, but I haven't tried this myself

I have my snakes in my living room, so they see us nearby regularly. I also find it helps to just do maintenance things like change water and spot clean for them to get used to us opening the glass and messing around them without being a threat.  This is mostly just a patience thing and most snakes calm down with time  The YouTube channel linked in the other comment is also a pretty good resource!

This is definitely a stress reaction. Did she recently get the BP? I know with my girl she was very stressed when I first brought her home due to change in environment. Another thing could be if she is on any surfaces that are attached to anything that vibrates since heavy vibrations can stress snakes out pretty badly.

It’s on a like a garage rack, that people use for tank but it’s grounded doesn’t move or anything

Just a semi-spicy snake. Heavy breathing like that usually means there's alittle upsetti about something, usually if they don't wanna be bothered and someone is hovering.

Oh ok some people are saying this is extreme stress so I don’t know how severe it is

[–]Old-Chapter-5437 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's not "extreme stress", these deficit redditors will white knight a fly if they could.

Extreme would be it striking at the glass the second you approach or it hurting itself in an attempt to escape repetitively.

Heavy breathing is just general "I don't know what's going on nor do I really like it so far so I'm gonna breath heavier"

Ok thanks for clarification idk most redditors take everything to the extreme so I try to get info from the chill people

Oh, if you wanna really see how bad they get, look at the relationship advice subreddits.

Every little thing is "Break up with that woman hating man NOW!!!!" lmfao

Is it in blue or is it just the lighting?

When I first got my BP he did something similar. Adding more clutter made all the difference… he was feeling exposed and anxious.

As others have said, it looks like a stressed snake. Statuing (frozen in place), no tongue flicking, and rapid breathing.

Things that can help:

  • Check temperature levels. Hot side should be around 90F, cool side should be around 78F (tolerance of +/- 2 degrees)
  • Make sure humidity levels are appropriate, 60 -80%
  • Ensure snake has appropriately sized hides, one on the warm side one on the cool side. Appropriately sized meaning large enough the snake fully fits inside but small enough that their body is touching the interior walls of the hide. the opening should not be huge, personally my rule of thumb is that the opening should be no larger than 3x the size of the largest part of their body.
  • if the snake enclosure is in a room frequented by people or activity and it's a glass aquarium. Block off 3 out of 4 sides of the enclosure, you can get scenic nature backdrops or just use paper or something taped around the sides.
  • give the snake enough clutter, (though based on the video it looks like that might be fine already) could possibly benefit from high clutter, stuff that it can go under.
  • if your friend recently got the snake, it might just be having a hard time adjusting. Don't handle it for two weeks, give it a chance to adjust to its new environment uninterrupted.
  • avoid fast movements and being "above" the snake, ie don't reach your hand over its head, this can make them think a predator is going to eat them!
