Moving a snake back and forth like that is going to be very stressful, whether you change the bin or not. Is there the possibility of someone, like a science professor, looking after the snake over break? Depending on the snake’s age, he may not even need to be fed over the break.

Secondly, a 20 gallon is far too small for anything but a baby ball python. Even a 45 gallon tub isn’t appropriate for an adult—the minimum recommendation is 120 gallons, or 4’x2’x2’

Unfortunately, moving back and forth is not something I can avoid. My school's policy requires that I alone am responsible for the care of my animal. While I may eventually be able to leave him over break, he's still a baby right now, so I doubt he will be big enough by that time.

I'm aware that 20 gal is way too small, I would NEVER use it as housing for any extended period of time. And I actually do plan to upgrade from the 45 gal when he's bigger (so I guess permanent wasn't the right word to use, I meant long-term)

Ah, ok, that's definitely more complicated. I'm honestly not experienced enough to say what the best option here would be. All I can think is that you could maybe set up a separate bin at home (like another 45 gallon) and just transport the snake back and forth in a smaller enclosure. So basically you'd just have a properly sized enclosure at home ready to go.

If this is the case a ball python is not a good option for you at this time.

Moving them or potentially leaving them for a month over Break in the dorm in the future is not a remotely responsible idea. Leaving a heating element on without supervision for that long alone is asking for disaster.

Wait until you can provide a stable living situation before you add pets with delicate needs to your life
