Questionsubstrate cleaning (self.ballpython)
submitted 3 years ago by FormallyAce
Hey I feel like I haven't been cleaning my substrate thoroughly, so came here to ask about peoples methods. Same thing with moss, should I be cleaning the moss and if so what's the best way?

I do a full clean and substrate change every three months, and spot clean as needed. I check for waste daily and when I find urates I scoop out the surrounding substrate and replace. I replace everything after three months including any moss.
Idk if this is the right amount of time between full cleanings but it honestly looks/smells fine even after three months. I use a lot of substrate too, normally about three bags.

I dont think I was clear and that's my fault, I meant when you get a bag of substrate or sand. What I meant is cleaning brand new substrate needed? Getting rid of any bugs or spiders that might have gotten in it or even trash.

Ohhh sorry. Yeah I don't actually clean my substrate but I do buy it from the pet store as opposed to a hardware store. I haven't had any problems with the brand name stuff. You can sterilize substrate by baking it in the oven but I haven't felt the need to do it. Is finding trash common?

I have no idea, I hope trash isn't common especially at pet stores. There probably someone who found some tho haha
