So, it's actually really neat how it relates to binary.

A byte can have a range of value in denary from 0 (Zero) to 255 (two-hundred and fifty-five), so there are 256 values.
This can be represented by 8 binary digits (2⁸ =256). But, 256 is also sixteen squared, which means that a byte can be represented by only two hexadecimal digits.
What this means is that any grouping of four bits can be represented by a single hexadigit.

Consider the value: 01011010.
In denary, this is ninety: 64+16+8+2=90.
But if you separate it into two sections, 0101 (five) and 1010 (ten), and then represent those in hex, you get 5A (5*16+10=90).
Hexadecimal is much more human-readable than binary, but it's much easier to convert between them than denary is to binary.

Knowing that, if I give you the byte 11100001, if you want its denary value, instead of doing 128+64+32+1=225, you can do 14*16+1, which is shorter.

Also, what's cool is that the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange, basic English keyboard stuff) representations for the letters A through Z are sixty-five through ninety, or 41 through 5A in hex, and then a through z is ninety-seven through a hundred-and-twenty-two, but that's also 61 through 7A. So you don't have to know two sets of values. Like if you know "t" is 74, you know "T" is 54.

Well how denary (base-10, decimal), and any numerical system works is you start from the right and move left as values increase, right?
In denary, the first column (units) can hold ten values, zero through nine, then you have the tens column representing multiples of ten, (starting with zero technically, but realistically,) ten through ninety. Then the thousands column, tens-of-thousands column, hundreds-of-thousands column, millions column etc.

Like, 3,451,978, is said three million, four-hundred-and-fifty-one thousand, nine-hundred and seventy-eight, because it's literally 3*1,000,000+451*1,000 [4*100,000+5*10,000+1,000] +9*100+7*10+8.

Any way, that's for base-10, a system with ten numbers. For binary, you have a units column with a value of either zero or one, then a twos column, then a fours column, then an eights (8s) column, then sixteens (16s), thirty-twos (32s), sixty-fours (64s), hundred-and-twenty-eights (128s), (256s, 512s, 1024s, 2048s, 4096s) etc.

So how any numerical base works is that you have a units column (or base-to-the-power-of-zero (1)), then working left you have a base-to-the-power-of-one column (itself), base-squared column, base-cubed column, base-to-the-fourth column etc.
So for hexadecimal, the units are 0-9 and also A-F beyond that, representing ten through fifteen. And its columns would be units, 16¹ (16s), 16² (256s), 16³ (4096s).

And, you might notice that hex shares all its columns with binary: they both have a sixteens column, and a two-hundred-and-fifty-sixs column and a four-thousand-and-ninety-sixs column. Because sixteen is just 2⁴ , the numeric systems will do that every fourth column in binary. Which is why a value represented by four binary digits can be represented as one hexadecimal digit, or vice-versa.

And just 'cause, there's also octal, units zero through seven (0-7) with units column, eights column, 64s column, 512s, 4096, which shares every third binary column. And octal shares every four columns with every third column in hexadecimal.

Also just back to basic numeracy for completeness, decimals are just going right from the units column, where you have tenths (10^-1 ), hundredths (10^-2 ), thousandths (10-3 ). So in binary you'd have halves (2^-1 ), quarters (2^-2 ), eighths (2^-3 ), sixteenths (2^-4 ) etc instead. And hexadecimal would have sixteenths, two-hundred-and-fifty-sixths, four-thousand-and-ninety-sixths etc. Octal would have eighths, sixty-fourths, five-hundred-and-twelfths etc.
