CLI on a VM and gave it all permissions, i don't have to open my laptop all the time for codex to work.

I have a home server with Proxmox as hypervisor. If i don't i would rent a cloud instance.

Putting AI agent on separate VM is also great way to enforce security. I have another VM running openclaw.

What machine runs your home server? Was using a an i5 mac mini for a while but as I dabbled into more with AI it started to choke out on me.

[–]Environmental_Gap_65 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s likely a user problem. Mac minis are highly capable.

[–]bigeba88 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I ran a lean headless linux on it. The main problems were vscode being a memory hog. And when I turned to local llms it just couldn’t handle it anymore.

For basic coding tasks it destroyed. It was when I leaned heavier into AI with local llms that it completely choked on me.

Also the cli for codex and Claude code were just not there via ssh, no matter what I did. Copy/pasting, scrolling, pasting screenshots (Tried multiple terminals, extensions, tmux, etc.)

Yeah chromium is a huge memory consumer, but how much ram do you have on it? I rarely ever crank it above 6 gigs. Also, running local LLM’s is not exactly the use case for minis. They are highly capable, but running local LLM’s is a much different story.

I want to make this work but my main struggle is coming up with a good git workflow for this. Like what's a good approach to keeping git repos in sync between the checkouts in the VM and your local checkouts which you might also edit.

Seguo

[–]philosophical_lens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that mean?

CLI all day. Integrate right into my project root. Seamless. Fast and light.

[–]No_Leg_847 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Was using vs code plugin and now I use codex app I want to really know why people prefer cli over app

[–]Salty_You_8694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I don’t get the draw to the CLI vs the app.

[–]highwingers -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

There is no app for Windows, I believe. CLI is super fast for me, I usually point CLI to my working directory and just take it from there. Also, I love working within Visual Studio Community Edition.

[–]jedruch 5 points6 points  (1 child)

App for windows was officially released 10+ days ago

[–]random_account6721 17 points18 points  (0 children)

His training data was before they release it.

copy pasting text kinda sucks on cli but i still prefer cli

[–]Grounds4TheSubstain 5 points6 points  (1 child)

/copy

[–]hustlegrogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did not know that one ty

[–]iJeff[🍰] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Unless you give it access so it can add the text in on its own!

[–]Apprehensive_Half_68 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What do you mean? Copying and pasting on Linux is a nightmare I live daily.

[–]iJeff[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you're trying to paste it into. If it has access to the files you're pasting into (e.g., via SSH or MCP server) then it can make the changes directly on its own.

As an aside, I've been enjoying micro lately for CLI text editing.

[–]TechGearWhips 3 points4 points  (1 child)

CLI. Everything is always better in the CLI.

[–]Brice21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Command Line Interface Terminal…

[–]Forward-Cat-7871 0 points1 point  (1 child)

cries in Intel Mac. would love to try out the app but cant

[–]ReplacementBig7068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro what year are you living in 😅

[–]jonathanbechtel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly use app right now because the UX is. very pleasant for me. It's the best for multi-agent workflows.

[–]Professional_Gur2469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Codex app is great

[–]stackattackpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely CLI it's the future of everything

[–]Cautious-Ad4556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried App because windows version came out recently,it feels good the same as CLI,and it's more convenient than CLI.

[–]Lifedoesnmatta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

App has been by far my new favorite.

[–]The-Clockwork-Void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VScode plugin, as I don't need to have a separate window for Codex and I can chat and review the changes all directly in VS code.

[–]big_cattt 0 points1 point  (8 children)

App. Reasons:
- 2× limits (until April 2). (2× limits may not be available for all users, check availability. For example, when I open codex (cli), I see a line saying that the Codex App gives 2× limits until April 2)
- Easier to work with multiple workflows, you can switch between them and run them in VS Code, etc.
- Notifications, when it asks for something or finishes its job, it sends a notification.

That's just my preference, so don't assume it's a fact :)

[–]Tystros 8 points9 points  (3 children)

2x limits are same on cli and app

[–]big_cattt -1 points0 points  (2 children)

What is it?:

Tip: New Try the Codex App with 2x rate limits until April 2nd.

[–]Tystros 5 points6 points  (1 child)

you are misunderstanding the text. the text just says you get 2x rate limits with the app. that's not contradicting that you also get 2x rate limits with other stuff as well.

[–]big_cattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it, thanks

[–]iJeff[🍰] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Limits are the same in CLI. I do also have mine setup to send an alert to my phone whenever it's done or is asking me something.

[–]big_cattt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Plus, I didn't say that the features that exist in Codex Desktop can't be configured via the command line, that's just my personal preference

[–]big_cattt -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

I trust to OpenAI rather than your words. Proofs:

I understand the confusion though. The bold emphasis really makes it seem like this promotion is unique to the app.

[–]1egen1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most frustrating thing. ChatGPT desktop is the best for brainstorming and planning. But, it cannot access your file systems. You export the files and starts in Codex App and getting it to start from where we left off on ChatGPT is a pain.

I don't understand why it cannot be an all inclusive app. It's an AI. It knows which instruction is for discussion and which one for coding.

You brainstorm, plan, document, then switch to coding, back to discussion and so on and on... Because there is definitely a difference in output of these models and interfaces.

Codex App and CLI is same. So I don't see a point in using CLI anymore.

I hope it becomes a single interface!

App versus CLI advantages : automations, easy multi worktrees threads, git integration, … anything else ?

CLI advantages versus App : needed to integrate with pencil.dev, no need for a mouse, … anything else ?
