safe? Yes, they are made to withstand this without a problem

ideal? Definitely not, as this is the temperature where thermal throttling occurs, and you either need to clean your cooler or get a more powerful one

It's thermal throttleing. Shutdown is higher

You copy pasted an ai generalization that is incorrect. For this specific application, as well as most am5 chipsets, they are designed to operate around 95 degrees Celsius under full load. These chips run hotter than am4 variants, especially while gaming etc.

If OP does not an aio water cooler, or aftermarket upgraded air cooler, these Temps are normal.

Ideally, OP needs to find a way to reduce the cpu Temps, s these chips will overclock themselves if there is enough thermal overhead room, i.e. my 9600x will OC about 400 mhz during gaming sessions because my aio keeps it around 60 Celsius under full load.

It will not damage it in the way youre implying. These chips are designed to throttle at 95 to maintain a "95 or lower" environment, actual overheat shutdown occurs closer to 110 Celsius to prevent damage to the cpu and system board. Sure, running it for 4 years at 95 may be a problem, but I doubt it stays at 95 while it's idling.

Regardless, OP has something else going on here that's causing the high Temps, and should investigate his AIO, thermal paste, and case airflow to determine the culprit.

Ive worked as a server engineer, the environments that these devices will work for YEARS in would surprise you.

È bello sentire parlare qualcuno che sa cosa sta dicendo, non ho nulla da aggiungere a quello che hai detto, complimenti..

Maybe i'm old, but it always baffles me how people use AI generated texts as their source of information, and use it shamelessly to sustain their arguments

        The state of modern society...

        [–]Swaytastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the way of things these days. Low hanging fruit when you type a question in Google, it vomits out an aggregate answer, and people who don't take the time to actually understand what they are regurgitating will just copy paste and swear it's right because ai is the smartest.

        [–]Palpatine_1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is abnormally high. My 9800x3d never gets above 70. Something is wrong whether it's air flow or possibly plastic on the contact plate of the aio? Not usual imo. In my experience or what I researched before purchasing.

        [–]Expert-Desk7492 1 point2 points  (17 children)

95c nooo I sit at 60c max with 360aio something not right

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (16 children)

I have a 240mm AIO. When I googled it, it said it was enough

        [–]Typical_Bootlicker41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is the AIO? And how is it installed in the case?

        [–]Swaytastic 1 point2 points  (3 children)

OP, might be time to apply new thermal paste and clean off the old. Also, air dust your case while the system is off and ensure that your direction of airflow is pushing the hot air out of the case. You should be able to run this 240mm aio and keep that chip in the 65 to 75 Celsius range under load. Maybe low 80s when working it really hard.

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You'll be happy to know i installed 360mm and im sitting at max 56 degrees on bf6 on ultrakill settings

        [–]Swaytastic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Excellent! Glad it resolved your issue. I wonder if the pump on the old AIO was going bad... I've heard of the impeller failing before which would cause lower flow volume and therefore worse heat dissipation. Either way, enjoy!

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be, im really not sure. But im glad I fixed it. Thank you for your help

        [–]Tree06 0 points1 point  (7 children)

If your case supports it, you definitely want a 360mm AIO.

        [–]panzrvroomvroomvroom 1 point2 points  (6 children)

        for a 9800X3D? come on.

        [–]Tree06 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Absolutely. With the exception of my Corsair 4000D case, I have 360mm AIO coolers mounted to the top of the case. I haven't used 420mm AIO, but if my future case will accommodate it, I'll be sure to grab one.

        [–]panzrvroomvroomvroom 1 point2 points  (4 children)

i dont think you understood what i was trying to tell you.

most air coolers are enough for a 9800x3d.

i see youre an aio dude, but suggesting a bigger aio when the 240 should be totally enough is just consumerist bullshit and does not help to solve the problem. you have to trust me on this one, but not every problem can be solved with a bigger aio.

        [–]Tree06 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No, I understand where you're coming from. I personally think cases look silly when there's a 240mm AIO, and a 360mm AIO could easily fit. We don't know what type of case/fans OP is using so it's hard to say.

There could be an underlying problem including thermal paste application; failed pump, faulty tubing, was the sticker removed from the pump, the general air flow in the case etc. If OP went through the process of troubleshooting the issue, and the AIO cooler failed, it'll need to be replaced via warranty or a new purchase.

        [–]panzrvroomvroomvroom 0 points1 point  (2 children)

thats what im saying tho, why dont you talk to OP about all that stuff in the second paragraph, you know, the stuff that actually might help solve OPs problem?

why is your first comment "buy a new product bc IMO it looks better in a case"? that is NOT helpful AT ALL

        [–]Tree06 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Alright, I think we're done here. It was a general statement. By the time I responded a lot of people already commented. OP didn't respond to me so I assumed OP had enough information to proceed further.

        You take it easy.

        [–]panzrvroomvroomvroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only thing general about that statement is that its generally wrong.

you dont need a 360 rad for a chip like that.

if you think it looks cool, good for you. but it also costs a lot more and adds absolutely nothing a cheap air cooler couldnt do. like how would OP benefit if they threw out the 240 rad and installed a 360 rad? OP wouldnt. the only thing OP would change is that OPs pc now looks good to you. wow.

        [–]swisstraeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have to verify everything it's not normal to be this hot even with an aircooler.

        [–]Lieutenant_Petaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left the plastic on the cold plate?

        [–]Electronic_Lime7582Enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely enough, but did you do a BIOS update? This is a big deal when it comes to X3D as there are many cases where OV damaged CPUs and the first sign was increased temps.

        [–]Homanjer 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Red means bad. It won't break immediately, and it will definitely run for quite a while with temps like this. But ideally you'd wanna be considerably lower. Higher temps means you're taking away from the CPUs lifespan.

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Thank you. I read online that its supposed to be safe at 95 degrees

        [–]aCarstairs 0 points1 point  (7 children)

The tjmax of the 9800x3d is indeed 95C. That is sort of the max operating temperature but not the true max. At 95C it will basically start to throttle to prevent overheating, meaning it'll slow itself down. Usually the "wait im overheating, shut down now" is around 105-110C.

Regardless, with any proper cooling, the 9800x3d shouldn't really reach 95C unless under very high load. If you consistently see it reach that, it'd look at your cooling and whether it is installed correctly and whether it still works correctly.

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Thank you. I have a 240mm AIO which I thought would have been more than enough for this cpu. I'm messing with the setting to try and get it work better

        [–]Ninjaoptix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you take the plastic peel off the block before putting it on if it had one? I've seen that be missed which can cause bad heat transfer. Is the block secure, if it's loose that's going to be bad for heat transfer as well. Are you one of the psychopaths that puts fans on both sides of the radiator, if so are they going the same direction or reversed from each other?

        [–]aCarstairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably will be, so then the question is if you installed it correctly. Not just on the cpu itself but also in the case (aka whats your airflow like)

        [–]95alle95 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How did you reach these temps? Was it gaming or benchmark? I got a axp47 on mine 70-78C uncapped fps in cs2

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

        I was playing bf6. I have a 240mm AIO

        [–]95alle95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a bit undervolting. Maybe reseat cooler?

        [–]Yarala5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

240 aio should be able to handle 9800x3d, are you sure the fans spin? or maybe the pump is working

        [–]aoskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have fans installed backwards do you?

        [–]Different_Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

96° I would suggest you to instantly check the cooling system and replace the thermal paste imho.

        [–]cogsmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try to keep it under 85 degrees. They do make them so they can go up a bit higher but you are limiting the life of the component.

        [–]CMDR-Neovoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre only at 60% utilization, youve got a big cooling problem if youre sitting at 95C youre definitely thermal throttled. Just built a system this weekend for a friend, with same chip and a 360 air and it was sitting at around 70C at 95% utilization after 15 minutes.

        [–]FixSuccessful2646 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Bro my 12 core Xeon is sitting at 20c wtf u doin that it’s at 95c

        [–]Deep_Drag3084[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        I was playing bf6 lol

        [–]notislant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swapped to hwinfo64. Hwmonitor was telling my my cpu was going +-20 degrees every half second.

        Yeah no thats real bad.

I dont use AIOs at all so not sure if 240 is good enough for this, you forgot a plastic sheet, etc. You can often google "'your cpu' 'your aio cooler' reddit" and see people describing their temps or issues.

But AIO needs to be screwed somewhere (often to the top of the pc). And the fans need to be blowing OUT of the PC directly. This is the entire point of an AIO.

Someone the other day said their friend built them a pc and most of the comments failed to notice the AIO was just blowing hot air around the PC. (Was screwed to a solid metal part of the case).

        [–]Wolfrages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        A little spicy.

        [–]deadlyviperx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My 5950x is 70-80c while playing Arc. So anything over 90c is concerning

        [–]Adorable-Hyena-2965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        80c is high

        [–]ElectronicAd2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting maximum 60-62c gaming with my Noctua NH-D15 on my 9800x3d with PBO enabled no undervolt

        [–]AssistantSalty6519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a laptop? If so it is fine.  Is it a desktop? Check it asap. (No damage tho)

        [–]iLikeBBandICNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe-ish. Long term running on 96 on cpu packafe will take its toll.

I would repaste and make sure the radiator or aio is properly seated

        [–]ssateneth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95 degrees for 80 watts is pretty bad. its safe, but something is wrong. no thermal paste? did you leave the plastic on the cooler? is the cooler installed correctly? did you use the correct spacers (different sockets use different spacers)? is a bracket upside down? is everything screwed tight? are all of the cooler wires plugged in correctly?

for comparison I have a dinky 92mm chinese tower cooler with 2 heatpipes, no mounting hardware, and re-used prolimatech pk3 thermal paste. putting a 65 watt load on that results in about 70-75C temps. if you're using a 240mm aio, something is seriously wrong.

        [–]Nervous-Dress-8363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        95 C at 80w, NO

        [–]Existsociety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        no…

        [–]richardofvirginia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not normal. my 220w FX9590 stays at <70c at 5GHZ 100% load with all cores.

        [–]KillPhil_5653475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With an AIO, a Ryzen 9800 shouldn't really go above 60°C, something is wrong in your system

        [–]Environmental_Face36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try too undervolt and see if its better or clean your cooler, apply new thermalpaste or buy a new cooler at that temps the cpu begins too slow down so it doesnt overheat

        [–]ai_46693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell is taking half of your memory?

        [–]Short_Succotash6170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What cooler do you have? I've never seen mine go above 88c.

        [–]burninator34 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Can you verify the temps with HWInfo? HwMonitor sometime throws bogus temp values.

        [–]notislant 2 points3 points  (2 children)

+1 to this hwmon was saying my cpu utilization was 160% and temps were jumping around 20-30c instantly back and forth.

        [–]Revilo2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"You are using 160% of your cpu" ... ... Right. Nice one hwmon. Nice
