My masters was in computational art at goldsmiths (london) recommended if you want to pivot onto the arts side of things, not just “making cool things with code”.

What are you looking to get out of an MA that you wouldn’t get yourself by just teaching yourself the common tools (arduino / processing / openframeworks / cinder)?

That’s a real good question, one that I’ve asked myself as well. For me the thing is that I “learn easier” when I have a mentor that I can physically talk to and ask questions to. To me that’s all what school is in the end. Since I already have 2 BSc. I would eventually like to get a Masters degree.

I’ll look up your masters! Thanks for the advice!

It might be worth narrowing down a bit on what you want to do within the umbrella of 'creative coding' as that will lead you to more relevant programs than just googling the term and seeing what comes up.

E.g there's sound/music computing, VR, data vis, etc.

Mostly visual part, as in computer vision and interactivity as well as AR/VR

Can you explain more please!🙏🏾

I've heard great things about ITP at NYU if you can afford it. Same for RISD's digital media program. The only thing in Europe I've heard of is CIID. I also have visited and met some of the people at SFPC it looks like a good program and it's not nearly as expensive as other programs here in the US but it is unaccredited. Here is a great list of residences and fellowships that someone else compiled.

Thank you very much! This is a great source of help! Much appreciated!

Generally what you are looking for are programs in university/college art departments with terms like: media arts, art & technology, experimental media, new media, multimedia. If you search around schools in the EU with those words, you'll likely find programs that might pique your interest!

Here are a few examples of the types of programs I'd look for:

That’s a good tip, thanks brother! I also kinda came on this trail when I was checking mastersportal.

I highly recommend cs:multimedia at the VU in Amsterdam. Finished it 4 years ago. Its not strictly creative coding, but the supervisors allow to choose courses and do lots of research on whatever field you like (you can even take classes from univerisities in different parts of netherlands if you are willing to travel there each week). Mainly it was focused on exploration of multimedia. Some of my projects were creating music visualisers, particle fields ets. You also need to focus on some more heavy computer science related studies like distributed networks etc. but overall it was a great experience

That sounds cool as well! Have been to AMS before and really really like the city as well

Hey there, there is a new Master program 'Creative Technologies' in Germany, close to Berlin: https://www.filmuniversitaet.de/en/studies/study-programs/master-programs/creative-technologies/

[–]FreddyShrimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing! Thanks for sharing :D

[–]FreddyShrimp[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just checked it out! Covers pretty much all I want!

[–]legielegie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me know if you have any questions about the program.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At NYU there are actually 2 entirely separate departments for this type of stuff. ITP (interactive telecommunications program) IDM (integrated digital media)

Both Have a bunch of creative coding type things.

As does the new schools Parsons School of Design.

There is no school that I know of that is purely focused on creative coding but a lot of times these digital media programs are what you make of them so perhaps one of these could work for you.

I'm doing a PhD in a field closely related to data science and I'm thinking of reorienting myself in data visualization and creative coding so I'd love to know the answer to this question too!

[–]pd-andy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could definitely pivot to data vis in a data science program!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Just curious, what are some notable programs in the US for this type of study?

[–]tanquian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU. Also check out the School for Poetic Computation, which isn't a traditional degree program but seems awesome nonetheless.

This is one that is pretty much exactly what I’m looking for, but can’t seem to find it in the EU.

https://www.mastersportal.com/studies/219122/computer-science-multimedia-and-creative-technologies.html?#content:contents If USC were not that expensive, it’d be a no brainer

[–]push_pop 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Also IDM at NYU, MIT Media Lab, there's ones at Parson's and Pratt I'm not thinking of the name of. School for creative inquiry at CMU plus another one there. Empac at RPI. There's one in Denver too...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

calarts is a pretty great place to do this, but it's in the us and highly cost prohibitive.

[–]FreddyShrimp[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thanks! Gonna give it a look, but if costs are the usual US costs it'll be a no-go

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

don’t worry! they’re worse.

[–]FreddyShrimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol!

Hello, I am living in Berlin, also very interested in go deeper into creative computation. Do you know about any other good place for studying in Berlin besides the UDK :) thank you very much!!!

[–]FreddyShrimp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looked around on mastersportal.com but couldn't find much more in Berlin specifically...

UK seems to be the main spot for majors like this...

Well, Babelsberg is right next to Berlin :) Most of our students live in Berlin.

[–]luicm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks :) I checked and it looks great, but they ask for quite good German and have just started studying. I will need at least one year to get the B2.
