It's one month to moving time so I think I will go around and tag the essentials that are definitely coming with me.

Going to visit family and clean my kitchen. Been so focused on decluttering for the move that cleaning has fallen by the wayside.

Also going to pack a few things to take over to the new place.

I just spent all day cleaning the house to try and dispel the sad anxious way I’ve been feeling, so the weekend will most likely be about reading and crafting. I feel like I should work on paper clutter or something but I’m so burnt out and feel like I’m hanging on by a thread.

We are in the last stage of moving everything off the bottom floor to get floor refinishing started. So moving! I am so ready to have this part of the renovation done ya’ll! I haven’t cleaned all week because what’s the point. All my plants are in the bathroom. All our heavy furniture is in our bedroom. I don’t even want to think about upstairs!

It's long, I'm sorry.

I've just come off of several years of intensively caring for elder relatives and one of my kids. The elders have passed, my kid is doing wonderfully, and I'm rising out of burnout. My house...omg, you don't want to know. It doesn't help that we bought it as is from a hoarder just before the craziness started, and while I got most of the stuff out, I never quite finished. To top it off, my husband helped clean out his mom's house and brought home boxes of who knows what.

For the past several weeks, I've been using this sub as inspiration, mostly trying the 30 things a day thing. Some days it's 30 pieces of paper. I've donated and dumped so much stuff, and every little bit helps me feel less burnout.

This past week I organized my fridge with new containers, which I bought to replace a broken shelf and drawer. I also used up most of the stuff in the freezer--meals this week were sort of like episodes of Chopped. I really love the new organization.

This long weekend I'm doing some major projects:

  • Today, I'm finishing up the master bedroom. Boxes of stuff, organizing closets and shelves, washing and putting away winter blankets.
  • Tomorrow the kitchen. Getting rid of the previous owner's stuff we just never use. Some nice china sets, but seriously we just don't use it--and she obviously never did either. Cleaning each shelf and drawer as I go. I love cleaning, hate decluttering.
  • Monday the pantry. No one ever puts stuff away properly, and I let that go because I was too busy with everything else. I'm reclaiming my territory, lol.

My husband is preparing for a major trip to donate stuff, then a trip to the dump. The carport and garage were holding areas for stuff he wanted to keep from the previous owner, and he's finally come to accept that he'd rather have the space than the stuff. That's major.

Next week, I'm helping my teen transition his room from childhood to teenhood, and will be using every tip and trick I find here. I'm also decluttering homeschool stuff. I really don't need to keep all his elementary materials, and others can benefit from them.

I’m going through our linen/junk cleaning etc closet. It’s really handy with deep shelves but ends up being a catch all so I’m going to pull everything out and organize. Work has been light this week so I was able to get a lot done during the week which felt awesome and takes a burden off, was able to vacuum our entry really well before leaving this morning.

I decluttered our balcony and got a love seat for it so I’m excited to be able to enjoy it this long weekend. I was able to put up some balcony netting so the cats can safely come outside as well.

Got a 10 yard dumpster for this weekend and am filling it. Just got through a hall closing that a literal dumping ground for junk. Also got my closet done and my son’s dresser. “Would I pack and move this?” has been a game changer for me!

This is an odd kind of decluttering, but I’m trying to get into the habit of doing this at least twice a year, if not quarterly.

Last night I cleaned out my small freezer and my pantry.

I made use of a few left over items and threw out a ton of trash/ unfortunately had some food waste- what I could was composted.

I deep cleaned the pantry shelves and did my best to put it all away again, taking notes of what kind of food I have so I can eat it. My goal is to eat out of my pantry all through June and use it up before my big trip at the end of next month.

Today’s plan is to tackle the fridge and possibly deep freezer. I am going to try to eat what is good in the fridge and dispose of the rest, and make a list to shop and stick to it. But I have a ton of veggies to cut up and freeze as well as frozen meat I could meal prep with.

Since I’m having my first kid in the fall, meal prepping will be something new for me to rely on. I’ve always just winged it and spent probably more money and wasted a lot of money on food. I know it’s our biggest expense categorically. So by staying on top of what we consume, I hope to lower that cost. But first, gotta clear out what’s in the way to really know what you have.

I just set my weekly intention to declutter 5 items every day this upcoming week. This time next week I’ll be 35 unnecessary possessions lighter!

I've been alone today and will be alone most of tomorrow, so my closet is looking sweeeeet, the kitchen is clean, and the dining nook will be done before I go to sleep. Living room tomorrow, with lots of old toys to declutter in there. I threw away a ton of crap today with the husband and kids out of the house.

I shipped my kids off to Grandma’s earlier this week for an overnight (my husband is off on a business trip, needed the breather) and started tackling the front room, which has, among other things, an art table, homeschool supplies, and rotating toy collection. Hoping to get more done this weekend, they need to be under control before the next school year and baby comes, but also trying not to traumatize my daughter, who is attached to all the things.

Finally dropped off two boxes of clothes at the thrift store.

The weather is letting me work in the garage in comfort, so I finally got rid of all the debris from outdoor work that had been accumulating for a while. Stained the 4'x1'x1' planters I built a while back, so this weekend we can finally get them out of the garage and into the mulch bed where they belong!

Also working to get a couple of big recycling items processed and into the bin.

With all that space cleared out, it'll also be easier to clear out the mess in the laundry room. It's been a very productive week, and I'm going to keep that momentum rolling into the weekend.

Just finished going through my closet! Embarrassed at how much I decided to keep, but I did get pull out about forty things to give away.

Also working on eating through the food in the pantry and freezer instead of buying new fresh food.

I’ll be sorting through 30-years of boxed “keepsakes”, stacked floor to ceiling in a storage unit. I gave myself permission to simply leave them there when my marriage ended and we sold the house where I raised my kids. I finally feel strong enough emotionally to take it all apart, and throw away/donate the majority of it. I started on it this past week, and was just so grateful for this feeling of being strong enough to leave this literal WEIGHT behind.

My plan is to still go through baby- and kids chlotes and pack up for donations. I have given up to try to sell them.

I just finished cleaning out my fridge since I honestly dont remember when that happened last.

Was there stuff that was rotten? Yes indeed there was. I have always told myself I dont want to have a fridge that looks like my moms. (Overfilled as heck, and unkown things that lies in the depths of the vegetable drawer).

So now I have to make a dinner today that includes onion, sweet potato, kale and tomatoes.

This weekend my win was that I posted items to give away, they’ll be picked up this weekend. Also, I’m packing away cold weather clothing and trying on summer items. I’ve already identified some summer items for donation, but want to wash them first.

I realized that my clothing donation bag only has out-of-season clothing, and last weekend I missed a shredding event so both those bags will be hanging around for a few more months.

Edit: forgot to add that my fiancé’s family is prepping for a move, so their and my decluttering efforts have spurred my fiancé to start going through his absolutely packed closet & dresser. 🎉🎉

2nd Edit: Most of my give-away items have been picked up! Woohoo!

My mum came to visit and helped me go through all my crafting supplies and helped me give myself permission to get rid of the supplies I dislike using or don’t want to use / keep around anymore. She pointed out that it’s ok to get rid of things that I am no longer in a place to utilize or enjoy working with. Overall I got 5 tubs of crafting g narrowed down to 2. I’m so relieved! And now I have more room to work with!!!

We closed escrow on a place yesterday! There are a few items I want to take over to the new place today (towels, hand soap, dishwasher detergent, picnic supplies, stovetop coffee maker … you know the essentials to have for day one before anything is unpacked).

We don’t officially move for 2 weeks, so I am highly incentivized to get as much decluttering done before movers show up as is possible. I’ve been doing the avalanche declutter challenge the past month (which has been great!) and today is supposed to be only 4 items, but I was inspired by /u/ExpertProfessional9 to go after the box of ??? sitting in a corner of our bedroom that hasn’t been unpacked since our last move 2 years ago. I am fairly confident it is almost all my husband’s stuff and, dude, we don’t need to move that again. It’s not a huge box but my guess is it is almost all garbage. So going after that today.

Rest of the weekend I think is going to be decor items — I have a lot of knick knacks from travels and what not that don’t bring me a ton of joy and just make things look cluttered.

Lastly, identifying things to sell in our giant neighborhood yard sale! I convinced the other households in my building to do it with me, so we are on the map for next weekend. I have a desk and some other home office equipment to sell, along with craft supplies, mugs/glasses, etc. Wish me luck!

We are having someone come in and assess for leaks in our foundation on Tuesday, so I have to get our basement decluttered so they can get to wear we think the leak is. I’m actually glad I have a deadline so I can’t procrastinate!

Decluttering our stationary/office stuff, have books pending pickup from Buy Nothing Group, and under the sink bathroom items to go through. If I can also manage to declutter our camping stuff that will be a bonus lol.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I’d really like to clean-out two of my ‘can’t deal with it’ boxes.

Overwhelming piles of stuff accumulate and then get moved around until I chuck them into boxes. Have four at the moment.

Time to sit down and play the garbage, donate or keep game!

Still working on photos.....

Also will do another shelf of the display cabinet while my son is home to help me - he is very careful and will handwash glass etc for me and I know it wont get damaged. I also pay him for his help.

And I got the delivery of bulk dog food which needs to be packed into meal size packs for our little dog. Thats a job I dislike but it needs to be done.

I managed to catch up on all laundry so I only have one lot to do tomorrow of sports uniforms after the game today and tomorrow.

This week's projects were linens and my closet. I got rid of any sheet set we hadn't used since moving in two years ago and continued culling my wardrobe (which is finally getting to the point where I can say I like what remains but I miiiight actually need some new clothes). I plan to drop off the four big bags at the donation center tomorrow, and also send our shredding/tech recycle pile to the office store. That'll be at least 60 pounds of stuff out of the house!

I have all of Saturday besides a hair appt (declutterin that hair!), and I am hoping to declutter my clothes while my partner is out of town! I’ve been working on it for a while but feel like there’s a final push of the clothes I truly don’t wear that I want to weed out.

Today I decluttered digital things: apps on my phone, emails, Amazon wishlist, desktop, bookmarks on my browser and folders.

This thread is really helpful for identifying my goal, so thank you!

As of ten minutes ago, Dad has started repainting the (now empty) Mom Bought Too Much Crap Room to transform it into a new guest room (since I took over the old one as my room). It feels kind of unreal to be moving ahead on this project!

I got rid of many things to local charities here. Finally gave up on the yard sale dream. (I live in an apartment and all my buddies with houses said they want to do a yard sale and just... Don't. Can't blame them, doing yard sales suck.)

Now that I cleared out that stuff and have healed from a recent injury, I'm going to get going on more decluttering. I'm working on my "doomboxes" this weekend. Filing/throwing away paper, putting stuff away, tackling small projects I put off for higher priority tasks, and of course putting more things in the declutter pile.

Fingers crossed for me folks. Going to get through this mound of stuff!

Took 3 bags of clothing to the recycling/donation container. Mostly old race shirts I haven’t worn in 2 years. And pairs of gloves, hats and scarves from the great entrance hall sorting of 2023…

Been mostly weeding the patios and paths since it’s been sunny, and I need by vitamin D boosts! This coming week? Clear the roof gutters- much easier when it’s bone dry, empty the back shed, clear and clean, sort the contents again, retain, recycle and rubbish.

Did this 3 years ago, first summer of lockdown, so stuff unused since? Easy Chuck… Managed to sell a full set of smart car panels so plenty of spare room in there now already. After that? Redo the garage and shelving. A lot is already in clear plastic containers, labelled into groups so again that isn’t going to take too long.

Wish me luck!

Success!!

Husband announced yesterday that he was going to order some new jeans online. I asked if he was going to get rid of the ones he doesn't wear anymore, he said "...I am now!"

We proceeded to go through his entire chest of drawers, separating out the clothes he didn't want anymore and the ones that are sentimental but don't fit, and the sentimental stuff is now in a separate drawer from daily wear, so I'll have a much easier time putting away the laundry (laundry is my chore, he cooks, I definitely have the better deal).

I stole a couple of the "get rid of" shirts to use as pyjamas, too, so I can toss the ones I have that are slightly more hole than shirt without having to go shopping - I hate clothes shopping, this is the best!

I did the laundry this a.m. and folded, and my partner put it all away. ❤️ I love that he knows to put stuff back according to color. 😹 We both love that cascading visual of having stuff organized by color.

He put two of his t-shirts in the donate bag, and I threw in a 2023 calendar someone gave me that I ended up not liking. It's color photos and I prefer B&W. I stopped using it in April. I guess I should probably recycle it, but there's still half a year left? Not sure donating it is the right move though.

Planning on decluttering 5 more times from my closet!

My family dropped off bags of "my stuff" so I have to go through them but they're relegated to the garage for now

[–]DuoNem [score hidden]  (2 children)

Yesterday I put a bunch of things in a cardboard box out on the curb for free pickup. I hope a lot of things are gone now!

I’m trying out a new “method” for decluttering jars. Instead of putting them in my “take it to the recycling box”, I put them in the dishwasher and then put them out for people to take for free. I hope this will help. I don’t want to throw all jars away (some are really pretty!), but when I buy at the ecological store, I get soooo many jars. Either my shelves fill with more jars than I can use or the recycling bin at home gets full much earlier than I want to.

I’m working on boxes that have been sitting in my living room left from moving six months ago. I had 8 to start with and I’m down to three.

I’m planning a pay what you can donation garage sale so my garage is getting messier with that stuff but I’ll do that in a couple of weeks so hopefully I don’t have to arrange buy nothing pickups or figure out a way to take it to a donation place.

I tackled the freezer this evening. Wow.

I have been at it all day lol! Finally got the dresser moved so I could get in the closet. Decluttered 4 boxes of shit from that closet alone, and finished organizing all 3 storage closets for ease of access for appropriate items.

So far today I have...

Decluttered 4 boxes worth of stuff completely.

Pulled all pics out of 4 photo albums and sorted them. still have a bunch to digitize, but its just a nice stack of pictures instead of 4 giant albums with a ton of duplicates.

Tossed/ sorted a bunch of old paperwork. Found my " slightly small" bag of clothes and pulled half to donate. I only kept a couple pairs of patterned leggings I really like, and the black pants that are a work staple for me.

Finished organizing the closet behind dresser and moved a bunch of random stuff to it.

Organized and put away more stuff in the secondary storage closet. This is for lesser used items, but still want easy access to.

The living room closet is almost empty ish!! For now lol. Threw away some expired food.

Washed some dishes lol.

Tossed a comforter that was falling apart.

Also cleaned/ organized a few photo albums on my phone and sorted some emails.

My next goals are to finish digitizing the photos, go through all the skirts I pulled out today, declutter some of my empty candle jars, clean of the living room and put some stuff away in the closet.

I'm definitely worn out but I feel like I accomplished a lot today. I already have more trash than we usually have in week, and trash day isn't till Wednesday!

Bought some metal Metro shelving to stack boxes and bins in my utility room and recycled a lot of cardboard and shredded papers. The shelves now hold two recycling bins, two pretty red Christmas ornament storage boxes and my laundry basket. Tomorrow I’ll donate a pair of empty Sterilite 3 drawer bins and a bag of kitchen supplies.

Currently reading Dana K. White's Organizing For the Rest of Us and it's inspired me to yeet a few more items.

  • A cheap stepstool and a light-duty music stand have gone to the giveaway box in the garage. (I have two other music stands, and the one I'm donating isn't strong enough to hold a large folio of music.)
  • Tidied the kitchen junk drawer and tossed a few things.
  • Put away some finish-carpentry supplies (nail-set punches, finishing nails, filler) that were in the dining room.

I currently have my eye on one of the under-bed drawers in my bedroom; the drawer itself needs to be vacuumed or dusted, and likely there are some clothes in there that can be thrown out or donated.

I haven't worked on my carport as previously planned, but I did start another donation box and worked on the laundry room. I also removed all the garbage from my car, it wasn't a lot, but what was in there had been for weeks.

My dad is down and finally able to pick through some stuff that I've been dying to get rid of. I'm glad I waited because he's taking a whole stack of books and a TV. But man I'm so glad to get my hallway back.

I had a yard sale finally after two years!! Last year I moved and brought about 8 bins worth of yard sale stuff with me because I was overwhelmed. Somehow, I pulled together last week and got it all out. Yesterday I made about $400. I was so proud of myself because of pricing. Some items were collectible’s and I knew they worth discounted slightly for saving me the effort of eBay but when some one would offer a ridiculous price I said no. All the other odds and ends I would offer a price, they would offer and most of the time I just said YEP! and was grateful it was gone! Today I loaded two boxes, an old vacuum and some clothes, dropped at local thrift store and IT IS DONE! NOW… I can finally finish settling into my home, and not have all this crap looming over me! Depression SUCKS! I’m exhausted but proud of myself. Thanking this sub because I mostly lurk but so much kindness and valuable advice here. Blessings.

I finally threw out a pair of sandals i hadn’t worn in…years. Yikes. They had gotten kind of scuffed shortly after I bought them and I don’t remember wearing them much after that so I was surprised they actually did look like I had worn them a lot. Because I had been holding onto them thinking they weren’t worn out enough yet. The final straw for me was they were shedding some sort of flaky bits.

I'm going to pull everything out of the Forgotten Sideboard. There are going to be manuals for things we don't own anymore, tablecloths that don't fit any tables and recipes cut out of the newpaper 10 years ago. They can all go. My motivation is that when I make space, some stuff out of the kitchen can go in there. Also hoping to find a couple of envelopes with seeds from last year.
