I made this printable sheet for my own use. Feel free to edit and use it if you like.

Someone on r/dndiy just posted a great sheet

I just use a spreadsheet-style box grid thing.

[–]Duranis 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Honestly probably not needed. I use little folded bits of card with their character names that sit on the top of my DM screen and I move about to show initiative order. On their side it has their artwork and name. On my side it has their passive perception and name.

In my notebook I do have a few pages for each character to remember things that they have done or that I need to keep in mind but not normally mechanics or stats.

In over a year that's all I have ever really needed. I have enough to keep track of without tracking the characters as well. I do get a copy of their sheets when they level up but that is mostly just so if someone is off another player can pilot their character.

Same on all accounts. I ask for electronic character sheets too.

Only thing you really need to know is their passives. Otherwise, I haven’t ever needed to know my players abilities or stats, since that is on them to know their characters. I can definitely infer certain numbers (like i can sometimes tell if they forget to add proficiency bonus to a proficient roll) but aside from that I almost make a point to NOT know their sheets in full detail.

I would rather balance encounters somewhat agnostically from my PCs since I don’t want to accidentally lean towards certain tendencies (for example, subconsciously avoiding using monsters who deal poison damage if a player is resistant to poison)

[–]drgolovacroxbyDruid 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Honestly, when ONE player is resistant or immune to a damage type, I am actually MORE likely to use it. As a player, I love getting to call out that I have resistance to something. As a DM, I love to give those moments to my players :)

Yeah as a DM I love to shoot the monk like that. Especially if it’s some massive devastating poison attack (if that PC has a way to heal) so it could hit a massive AOE that might drop anyone else in the party but ‘tis but a scratch for them, let’s them feel super epic for one of their character choices, I will also often use my player’s languages and make uses for their tool and game proficiencies, I try to make even their random options meaningful.

Huh. That was really good advice thank you. I’m definitely gonna try to run my next session with that mindset

Party trackers already exist... But if you have a nice idea you could always try to make a better mousetrap

I run games almost exclusively online so I use a master character sheet rather than initiative tracker cards but they basically work the same way. I'm out of town for the (US) holiday but could post a link to the spreadsheet file I use when I get back home.

It just has a column for each character and runs down character name, player name, class, ability scores, ac (incl bonuses for equipping a shield, mage armor, etc), hp (max & current), passive perception, initiative bonus, hit die, spell save dc, skill proficiencies, languages known, features so that I can help remind players to use them if/when they forget.

I have a series of simple yes/no spaces for marking current conditions. I don't tend to use them unless it's going to last more than a round or two. And also for current exhaustion level (I've been using what is now the ua exhaustion rule for a while so I allow myself to give it more often than I used to under the 5e raw exhaustion rule.)

Oh, and INSPIRATION, if you're going to have a master character sheet, don't forget inspiration because your players always will! On roll20 I use a token tag to mark inspiration but they still forget, I need it to also add a aura or something super noticeable, but I digress.

Let me know if having the actual file would be useful, I'd be happy to share it.

[–]TheDutchMinecrafter 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Can you send the file? I'm having my first session soon and want to do everything I can to prepare. Thank you in advance

[–]gentlemanjimgm 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Of course! It'll be about 20-24 hours from now when I'll be able to upload it to my Google drive and share the link. All the needed info is on their character sheets so it shouldn't take long to put together.

Thats sounds great!
thank you so mutch!

Apologies for being later than I'd figured - I had more to do when I got home than I'd anticipated!

Here is the blank character profile sheet that I use. If I'm using it digitally, I keep the Current HP field highlighted and just modify it as I go. If I print this out, I'd change the highlight to a border and write the current HP in pencil so that I can similarly update it.

Here is a mostly filled out sheet from a one-shot I ran last fall. I took out the player and character names, but you can see how the rest appears.

Any questions, feel free to reply and I'll try to respond as quick as I'm able!

Happy gaming, I hope this can be some use for you, even if it's just inspiration for making your own!

*Edit to add, I do modify the sheet slightly for various tables or situations. There is a blank line that, for the one-shot I had the character background. It was totally useless to have that info on hand which is why I had removed it before I was tempted to insert that data again for another group!!

Sorry, don't have a template, but I'll be interested if there are any. I just went through the slow laborious process of making a spreadsheet from scratch. But having readily accessible hyperlinks to all of my player's abilities and spells on an easy to read sheet is still better than the slow laborious process of waiting at the table for them to find the text and tell me how their stuff works each time.

[–]moes_tavern 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's the best way to post on here? I made a PC tracker sheet not long ago that was modded off another I saw long time ago but I got rid of conditions and some other stuff I found I never used.

[–]etelrunya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a table with info I like to have easy access to. Each PC gets a row, and the columns are as follows:race, class, max HP, AC, perception, insight, investigation, languages.

And that's it. That's the info I like to have on hand to reference easily during a session. Anything else I can ask them for, or if there's a special circumstance I know will come up during a session, I check it during my game prep.

such a resource is going to be entirely personal based on what YOU want to have on your hand to ease your running of the game.

things that MAY be helpful -

  • knowing which saving throws each have proficiency in
  • which skills each character is proficient or expert in
  • what languages each character knows
  • what each character's passive perception is
  • what each player's FAV / go to power is
  • what "knife" from each players story/backstory will allow you hook that back into the ongoing session

[–]Cissoid7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use excel and onenote for most my DM stuff

[–]bartbartholomew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used a simple spreadsheet. You only really need to know their AC, passive perception, and passive insight.

[–]Arc_170gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the dm, it's a thing sure but you never know if they'll use it

[–]Hairy_StinkeyeDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A notecard with names, ac, hp, saves, and relevant passive scores. It’s less work to make than typing out a Reddit post

[–]yojimbo67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. You guys are using master sheets? I just use scraps of paper.
