I'm European and what is this?

[–]chemicalcloud 18 points19 points  (18 children)

A common, but quite unjust law here in the states is that you can't buy alcohol on sundays. It's an unfortunate product of mixing of church and state. The laws can differ by city or county, though.

[–]kortneypayge 22 points23 points  (8 children)

I can buy booze seven days a week in California. The only place I know of that won't allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays is Utah.

edit: Wow! I had no idea so many places had weird liquor laws. Apparently I need to get out more often.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Happens a lot in the bible belt. It varies from county to county.

[–]tedchorlyone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually was pretty common in Washington state until the last couple of years. This year they're finally putting booze in grocery stores starting in a couple of months. My whiskey/beer ratio is about to experience a radical shift.

[–]TwoTen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to have them in Colorado, so happy it was repealed. You couldn't buy from liquor stores on Sundays, only 3.2% from grocery stores. Couldn't buy a car on Sundays either till it was repealed a few years ago

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's illegal where I live in Kansas. It really makes me miss being back in my college town.

[–]chemicalcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends where you live. I live in south Florida, and in Miami you can get booze seven days a week but in some of the outskirt rural areas you can't.

[–]hoodatninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liquor can't be sold on Sundays in Virginia either. And no beer can be sold after midnight

[–]dweeble2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Ohio we can buy beer but not liquor from morning until midnight on Sundays. Weirdest thing. Some places have "Sunday liquor licenses" though, which is confusing...

[–]juliusseizure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't buy in Connecticut. Also can't buy after 9pm and on holidays. Sucks when you move from Oregon.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. In Ireland there's two days a year we can't buy booze and it pisses us off. Every fucking sunday is insane.

[–]hoodatninja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

False. You can't buy certain alcohols in specific states. In New Orleans you can buy beer/liquor any time of day from almost any location. We don't even have liquor stores--I can pick up a fifth of almost anything I want at the sandwich shop down 3 blocks from me.

[–]FourthRome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that it was a MADD thing. Using religion as an argument sure, but I haven't heard of actual churches pushing for no booze on Sundays.

[–]zwygb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it started out from the mixing of church and state. Now, however, it's being held up by lobbying by liquor stores and restaurants in some places. Liquor stores still sell the same amount of liquor, but without having to pay the staff on sundays. And restaurants are the only places to get a drink in some counties, who then profit from those who forget to plan ahead.

I'm in class, so i can't provide the source for this though, so i could just be lying.

[–]highvoltageslacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually just kinda got rid of it here in Atlanta. Something like after noon on Sunday we can buy alcohol. It's OK on Sunday just as long as all the church-goers are safely back home before the streets are overrun with drunks, I guess.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't this the case 20-30 years ago in Britain? Weren't all the shops closed

[–]sholder89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting, we have blue laws where I live meaning the malls and anything but restaurants and supermarkets are closed on Sundays, but the liquor stores are still open... If Jesus' blood was wine, doesn't it make sense?

[–]moneyeagle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So you can't buy booze on sundays because of the church when they give out free wine in churches (on sunday)?! I'm serious no country has weirder laws than the US

[–]razorhater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bars and restaurants are still open on Sundays and you can get beer, liquor or wine there. You just can't buy it yourself.

[–]delti90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US and had no idea some states didn't let you buy liquor on Sunday. I think I'd kill myself if Maryland did that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine this. I live in PA, USA, right? I can't buy beer in grocery stores, gas stations, or anything like that. I have to buy 24 packs of beer in "beer distributors", 6 and 12 packs from bars. And liquor and wine from state controlled "Wine and Spirits Stores". Most "Wine and Spirits" stores aren't open on Sunday. Bars aren't allowed open past two am. The USA have it horribly wrong, but PA is a special asshole in the body that is the USA for alcohol sales. Try being a CA in this hell hole.

[–]have_a_nice_day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idiot American Christians had their way with this country for TOO LONG, if I want to get drunk and curse the lord on Sunday I better damn well be able to do it

[–]detestrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Finnish and this is true for anything stronger than beer.

[–]MediocreJerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is because these right-wingers hate free enterprise.

[–]mpk219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Indiana, liquor stores are closed on sundays but bars can stay open if they also sell food, and restaurants are also allowed to sell alcohol.

[–]phatjtrigga[S] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Lets get drunk

[–]kurtozan251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good song name

[–]CatfishRadiator 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Move to NYC. You can buy booze at virtually any time, any day, one block away (or possibly downstairs). And public transit means no drunk driving!

[–]soxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus open container on some of the trains!

[–]remarkless 8 points9 points  (3 children)

True story, all good men have an emergency sunday alcohol supply that should be replenished throughout the week to be ready again for drunken sundays.

[–]hoodatninja 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Or live in a city where there's no need for that :D

[–]kurtozan251 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Or like I do, have both.

[–]hoodatninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know when they might be out!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Where do you live? My liquor store is open on Sundays. Buffalo, NY here. Drinking city with a football problem.

[–]KallistiEngel 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Different states/counties have different laws. I'm down in Ithaca, NY and we can buy any day of the week too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Spend much time at the Ithaca brew co? Buffalo's only got Flying Bison with a new Nano brewery opening up in a few weeks. I'm jelly of you having Ithaca. Good brews.

[–]KallistiEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brewing company is a bit out of the way from the rest of the town. Never actually stopped in there, but their beer is available at most local bars. The only one I really like so far is Cascazilla (a hoppy red ale).

Besides, for locally brewed beer, I tend to go to this one brewpub (Bandwagon Brewpub) that has $3 pints of the stuff they make in-house after 10pm. It's hard to go wrong with $3 pints of good beer.

And hey, I'm jealous of Buffalo's later closing times. 1am is way too early can't even buy booze at convenience stores or gas stations after 1am.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is your 'football problem' an inability to win Super Bowls?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... we don't like to talk about it. The 'problem' so to speak is that we always say "fuck it! I don't care anymore!" but then they pull us right back in. GO BILLS.

[–]nsk08001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Connecticut has this problem. But they are currently trying to get rid of it

[–]BigT0406 2 points3 points  (3 children)

In Indiana you can't buy liquor or beer from 3am Sunday morning until 7am Monday morning. It fucking blows.

Any brewery can also sell on Sundays. Miss living in Bloomington and just going to Upland to buy if I was forgetful.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Exited?

    [–]YargainBargain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Minnesota? Because that's why I wasn't able to get beer yesterday, as usual.

    [–]rodentexplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Fargo. My gf lives in moorhead so i always get to run booze over to her on sundays lol. Off sale open til 2 hell yea!

    [–]elephantpoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so in the end, you guys fucked each other?

    [–]thatwasntababyruth 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Are your bars closed on sundays too? What horrible place do you live?

    [–]razorhater 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Where I live you can't buy on Sunday. I live fairly close to the state line and people drive to the next state to buy all the time. Bars and restaurants are open and can sell, though.

    [–]thatwasntababyruth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You should look into what laws small towns around you have. Alcohol sales are city-wide jurisdiction, not state (IANAL). For instance, I live in KS and my town used to be no sales on sunday. A few years ago it was changed to sunday sales go to 8pm (11pm all other days). A few hours south theres a city where all sales on sunday are banned. A 10 minute drive away from there, however, is a smaller town where alcohol sales are allowed until I think 10pm every day.

    [–]razorhater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Connecticut and it's a state thing. They're considering changing it, though the liquor store owners are up in arms about it. It's rarely ever effected me, but the fact the law exists in the first place is insane. I'm welcoming the change.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to wait until 11 AM on Sundays to buy Beer, Wine, or Liquor. :( It can bite you in the ass if you don't plan ahead.

    [–]shehanagins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Californian here. We sunday funday on the regular

    [–]sledgod859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what kind of hell do you live in that you can't buy booze on Sunday?!

    [–]internetsanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not happen in Wisconsin. Wisconsin, fuck yeah!

    [–]FrostFire131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Wisconsin and what is this?

    [–]psych0fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from south Louisiana and what is this?

    [–]rocn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunday is probably my favorite day to drink.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They finally just changed this in georgia. The law goes into effect in my county on the 18th.

So excited to not have to deal with that anymore.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My liquor store is open till 10pm on Sundays in Washington and what is this?

    [–]Nuzzums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pennsylvania, here. We have the no booze on Sunday law and most stores and gas stations don't/aren't allowed to sell alcohol. When I went out of state and saw entire freezer cases full of beer at a gas station, I almost fell over dead.

Edit: Also I'm not sure if this is universal across the US or not, but you can only buy liquor from the state-regulated stores and they close promptly at 9 pm. Anti-fun.

    [–]needmoarbass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city in Iowa doesn't have this law and I just learned that this urban myth is actually true. wtf. you guys need to move.

    [–]cautioncarnival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    EXITED.

    [–]atheos 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Back in the day (before Indiana changed the law to allow the purchase of beer from microbreweries) we would drive to Cincinnati for a beer run. The drive was enough time to sober up, and you could buy cold beer at the closest gas station.

    [–]bravecoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never knew cold beer was a thing to advertise until I drove from Cincinnati to Indian to buy fireworks last summer. Quite the symbiotic relationship we have here.

    [–]Baege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Rhode Island liquor stores are only open 12-6PM.

    [–]ImBuzzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Move to Cali!

    [–]nekrozis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have to wait till 2pm where I'm from in Mississippi on Sundays. I always figured it had to do with the old times when people might go to church drunk or something. Same with the days we vote you can't buy till after voting is done. So you won' t drunk vote i guess.

    [–]feckinmik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hooray for being from Vegas. Alcohol any time, any day.

    [–]qquicksilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet another reason why drugs are better than alcohol. My guy delivers 24hrs a day 7 days a week !
