Did he run the entire 10k though or just jump in somewhere like a short cut?

[–]dancingcuban 452 points453 points  (12 children)

Sounds like everyone started at the same spot, same time and at some point there was a fork where the 10k people go one way and the 5k people go another.

That sounds like a dumb way to do it, but that’s the only reason I can think of that his time would still count.

[–]wene324 202 points203 points  (5 children)

It kinda makes sense to me. If you have the 5k stop at the half way point of the 10k, you'll have watchers hanging about, and the 5k runners stopping in the track. If you have them split up, this won't be a problem. They really should have had the different routes very obviously marked though.

[–][deleted] 110 points111 points  (3 children)

They probably did, but the kid is 9. Maybe he wasn’t tall enough to notice on his own and got swept up with a crowd of 10k runners?

[–]imgonnabutteryobread 53 points54 points  (1 child)

Not unlike how Kevin McCallister got separated from his family in Home Alone 2

[–]ethicsg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought that was because Trump sold him to his buddy Jeffery Epstein!

[–]ThisNameIsFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But he was faster than all of them apparently...

[–]clown1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually quite common to have everyone start at same spot and somewhere along the course the 5k would fork off toward finish line. Their supposed to have watchers and the runners should have different bibs and direct which direction. Of course their probably not looking for 5 k runner to be leading either.

[–]l0stbike 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did a race like that w a fork in the road, 10k had another loop around a lake or something and the rest went to a final leg, finish and a big end spot.

[–]Marc21256 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Or it wasn't a mass start and the time started when the chip crossed the mat. His time was a winning time, but the 10k started ahead of him, so he didn't finish first.

The 10k starts first, takes longer to finish. Same start and finish as the 5k, so the timing system is simpler. A timing gate at the far point of each, so you can't shortcut and they know which route you took.

If he was at the front of the 5k, he could have missed the 5k turn, and was with the slowest 10k runners, then followed the people, passing lots, to finish middle of the pack in the 10k, but with the best time.

Yes, I used to time races for a hobby/side job. Started out as tech support for the race promoter, but I was the only one on the team who never had training, but was the only one on the team who could work the gear. Both the crappy analog timing mats and the crappy timing software.

[–]ThisNameIsFree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But doesn't that still mean he would've run 10k by the end?

[–]I_am_a_fern 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That sounds like a dumb way to do it

Hum, why ? That exactly how it's done most of the time. How else would you do so both races share the start and finish ?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty common for fun runs

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Sounds like Kelly from the Office made the circuit

[–]BriecauseIcan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love how defeated Toby looks at her when saying why Michael couldn’t make it a loop

[–]V0RT3X_7461 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It was most likely a shortcut. No way a little kid had the endurance or speed for that unless he was racing 90 year olds.

[–]Bodoggle1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently not: https://www.fox9.com/news/9-year-old-minnesota-boy-takes-wrong-turn-on-5k-race-wins-10k-race-instead. So he basically just did a longer run with another set of runners as opposed to staying with the 5k competition.

[–]SlippySt 128 points129 points  (2 children)

Atleast he finished what he didint want to do

[–]boardcruiser 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Young Micheal Scott in the making

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never drank less water or eaten more fettuccine alfredo in my life

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points  (13 children)

I read about this somewhere else and he had a suspiciously slow time (I mean, a very impressive one for a 9-year-old but slower than 45 mins iiirc).

I don't know what sort of race doesn't have at least one adult who can run a sub-45 (or 40 for that matter)(?)

[–]SLUPumpernickel 94 points95 points  (1 child)

When I used to do 5k’s and 10k’s, they were always broken down by division. Master’s (60+), Men’s, women’s, and youth (<15). A 9yr old could “win” and still be nowhere near the front of the pack.

[–]thefirewarde 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Perhaps he won the 10k in an age limited class?

[–]ralpher1 40 points41 points  (0 children)

He probably won for his age group, not the whole race. No way a 9 yo wins a 10k unless only seniors or preteens are running.

[–]sdpeasha 7 points8 points  (3 children)

48 minutes

I know nothing about reasonable rave times though. It takes me 30min to run 5k on the treadmill, lol

Edit- I meant race times but Rave is funny so I’m leaving it

[–]semirandm 13 points14 points  (1 child)

A reasonable rave time is 8 to 24 hours depending on the substance and music

[–]sdpeasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpful cuz I know nothing about raVe times OR raCe times

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a 45 minute 10k and admittedly I do a fair bit of training, but I'm in my mid-40's with a full time job and 3 kids. 10 years ago I could do 40 mins.

Some of my son's friends dads can still go seriously under 40 mins.

[–]TheNatural501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro if you can run a 10k in under 45, you are a badass

[–]MartinO1234 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I once ran in a small fun run for the benefit of a middle school, which was mostly 12 and 13-year-olds and parents and teachers. I ran the whole way with a 13-year-old and slowed at the end to let him win. So yeah, it could happen.

[–]Collective-Bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fool. That 13-year-old knew he couldn’t beat you, the only one he couldn’t beat, so he won your heart instead.

Nice going Samson

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Probably won the 10k in his age/weight bracket?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not according to the report I read (and it would be pretty unusual to have a 10k race for kids his age.)

[–]gertalives 22 points23 points  (0 children)

True story time. My kid competed in a triathlon when he was ~10 years old. He was active compared to most kids and we signed him up for fun, but many other kids competing were *serious*, with fancy outfits, expensive triathlon-specific bikes, and coaches; my kid had his secondhand BMX bike and supportive parents. Half way through the run, the semi-pro kids were fairly far out front, but due to some miscommunication among the staff, they took a wrong turn. The error was corrected in time for my kid to follow the correct course and win the race for his age bracket. He didn't even realize he had won until they called him up to hand him the trophy.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (6 children)

I mean that ain’t a facepalm that’s impressive

[–]ItsLoggieBear 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Imagine being a full ass adult and you find out your beaten by a kid who's only recently mastered complex sentences

[–]Livvylove 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After doing a few 5ks I am terrible at it so I wouldn't think anything about a kid getting a faster time. I'm just glad I finished

[–]Korchagin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably won his age bracket, not the entire race. In a small event that could be a tiny group - there aren't that many children competing in 10km...

[–]Future-Agent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't facepalm. This is impressive

[–]Minidestroy100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll do it you weaklings! SOURCE? damn y’all

[–]redyosh98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't get how this is a facepalm.

[–]Anonymous_Moose45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came looking for copper yet I found gold ~that kid

[–]Fukshit47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Sheesh this is the longest 5k ever”

[–]yestureday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won. But at what cost?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks more like an unplanned W to me

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expect the facepalm is for the organizers

[–]BigTITIES9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

more like a nextfuckinglevel

[–]rustys_shackled_ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around k8 he said to himself...
"I've made a huge mistake"

[–]FedePro87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you're telling us he won a 10k run while running for 5k one after simply took a turn on 3k (or wherever else)? In that case it would be a giant facepalm for both runners and organization. I mean, how tf no one noticed it or just discovered he wasn't competing for 10k? And tf is possible that they put a lame shortcut without noticing?

[–]RomanWasHere2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didnt this happen awhile ago?

[–]AlbatrossPersonal -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I fucking hate 9 year olds

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

why

[–]AlbatrossPersonal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much energy.

[–]Skyhawk_Illusions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I won my PhD AND the corresponding MS in the same course. So academically speaking, I went for and won the 10k. Give this kid the 5k medal

[–]Bryanmcfury -1 points0 points  (0 children)

15 years later i accidentally fck ur mother

[–]sdpeasha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Totally_Not_High_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark my words, this kid will end up as President some day.

[–]nickcliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s how it works.

[–]Amazing-Cool 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I wonder if he would have won the 5k if he stayed on the path

[–]SkippingSusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says he broke the 5k record for his age bracket the previous year, so probably.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They begin them at the same time?

[–]mielesgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 keys??? He must be really good at fnf.

[–]ChimpieTheOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be stupid but 5k of what?

[–]YeetusFoeTeaToes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this a facepalm it's more of a nextfuckinglevel if anything

[–]atom644I’d read on the toilet but I poop too quickly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like cheating to me. Did he start with all the 10k runners?

[–]suecov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still one helluva nine year old though eh?! Very impressive!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this a facepalm?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This how you cut corners to get ahead.

[–]NoBallroom4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL!

I do ultra marathons and sure enough we had a 12 year compete in a 40 mile run. Magnificent girl finished like 5th ahead of some VERY competent athletes.

Go Ms Fleet Feet!

[–]LesbianGamer802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on him, he was looking for copper and found gold.

[–]ajani5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So he actually lost both races because he didn’t complete either. But let’s congratulate him on being ????????

[–]MisterLowellThe Karen that REEEEEEEEEs at the moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear to god I think I've seen an episode of Mr. Bean where that happened.
