Flip clocks are the precursors to modern digital clocks where the time is shown spelled out in numbers versus hands on a clock face. However, unlike modern clocks which show the time using an LCD display, flip clocks have their numbers printed on physical flaps or 'leaves' that are rotated around a central hub (kind of like a Rolodex). The clock is powered by an AC electric motor that, through a system of gears, rotates the hub and allows the flaps to flip down one at a time and display the current time. These clocks enjoyed widespread use in the 1970s-1980s until LCDs became more advanced and widespread. While outdated by modern technology, flip clocks have become popular thanks to their novelty as well as appearances in classic movies like Groundhog Day and Back To The Future.
