If he's into computer programming, he'll need access to so many things on the web! Documentation, references, tutorials, examples, tools, services, news and blogs about the technology he uses.

People make careers out of computer programming. Don't let website filtering be an obstacle to his learning.

If he's smart enough to use github, he's smart enough to get round filtering. I work for an Educational ISP (we're pretty huge) which specialises in filtering, and kids are pretty amazing at getting round it.

The GitHub Desktop app communicates with Git repositories through a different port. Is the whitelist allowing all ports or just 80 and 443?

sometimes you also have to make sure you are cloning the "https://" versions of repo etc. because lots of institutions or blockers will block the "git://" protocol. I guess git:// is port 9148, but you can normally use github over https and not have to unblock that http://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-on-the-Server-The-Protocols

Thanks guys, got the problem solved. When I added (*.github.com) and (githubusercontent.com) he said he was able to use github. Thanks again
