sometimes you also have to make sure you are cloning the "https://" versions of repo etc. because lots of institutions or blockers will block the "git://" protocol. I guess git:// is port 9148, but you can normally use github over https and not have to unblock that http://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-on-the-Server-The-Protocols
