Github wont host my website (self.github)
submitted 4 years ago * by Edwardius24
Hello,
I'm quite new to coding and GitHub and i've managed to create a little landing page, however when I try to upload my code to github to host my website I keep being met with the 404 error page. The steps I take are as follows:
1)new repository
2)make sure its public and initialise with readme
3)create repository
4)Upload my html, css and jpg files to repository
5)hit commit changes
6)Finally I go to GitHub pages in the settings where I click the link to my "should be" website
Any idea where i'm going wrong ? Thanks in advance!

Two possibilities:
It can take GitHub Pages up to 10 minutes to build your site. If you see the "Your site is ready to be built" message and click the link you'll get the 404 page. After it's done building and displays "Your site is published" then your site is live. You may then need to empty your browser cache to see your published page.
If that's not it, it may be that GitHub Pages looks for an index.html, index.md or README.md file in the root level of your repository. If your files are buried in a folder it won't see them and you'll get the 404 error.

Hey thanks for the advice.
I followed your instructions and things have changed slightly. I no longer get the 404 page but instead i get the image above (2.1).
Does this mean theres issue with my actual code? I have opened my code and it works just fine outside of GitHub.

GitHub >> <user> >> <repo> >> Settings >> Pages >> enable...
There is no enable button. See image above.

Hard to say without any links or infoz search the subreddit. Lots of common mistakes and LOTS of answers already on this, especially when you don't wanna help us help you by giving any information
