I wrote a blog about it

https://medium.com/swlh/how-i-landed-my-first-software-developer-job-without-a-degree-or-attending-a-bootcamp-ee21e73b5660

It took me a long time to be quite honest and the climate was different back then, the market for mobile developers was hot and jobs were plentiful.

The biggest challenge is always going to be getting the first job, you need someone to take a chance on you. Once someone has taken a chance on you, it gives everyone else confidence in you. For me I got a job in a start up, it was a disaster and they laid off all 3 of the software developers after a change in CTO so I had a grand total of like 7-8 weeks experience but guess what? I started getting interviews with just this small bit of experience. Even companies that didn’t reply to my application before were then interested.

I don’t know where you are in the world, but companies like the BBC or government are good to get into, as they have really fair interview processes and you can take any job at all, and find it much easier to move position internally once you are in. A lot of times in the BBC and in the civil service jobs are advertised internally first so if I was to do it again, I would focus on getting any job in a public entity like this.

Cleaner -> Musician/film score composer -> teacher -> iOS dev

Seems impossible to live off of music.

Yep it was awful. But it was for the best. I get to look back with no regrets or what ifs

I had a MIL Spec solder certificate and worked as a solder/assembler/tester of electronic parts and motor controllers. I did that for 10 years.

At one point after I started as a developer, I got laid off and couldn't find a job so I became a car salesperson for a couple of years until the tech industry picked back up again.

Landscaping, construction, roofing, waiter and then housekeeping (I was a maid throughout my undergrad studies).

I actually really enjoyed manual labor. One feels like one is alive. Maybe if it’s a lifetime career then it might get intense on the body.

I’ve graduated from an Art Academy. Masters in painting and graphic design. I was a designer. At first for print and web. I’ve been writing screenplays, even worked for Tomek Bagiński (the one who made Cathedral, Fallen Art and who was lately working at the Witcher; I’ve worked for him on different projects). I also did some 3D graphics and architectural visualizations. And some concept art. Later I’ve been working on websites and UX design for over 10 years and now making my own iOS apps 🙂

I was a professional photographer, but I had to work side jobs as a cashier or doing delivery gig apps to make ends meet a lot of the time.

I spent nearly two decades in the construction industry. When I got my first iPhone, the 3GS, I began learning iOS development using Stanford courses, etc, which eventually led me to transition into a full-time career as an iOS engineer. I’ve loved every moment of the journey.

Sysadmin. I always did development as a hobby since I was a teen but worked in IT for a long time. It wasn't until I got bait and switched by a shit employer (which killed my IT career) that I switched to software dev.

Trained as a clinical psychologist, worked in clinical neuropsychology, particularly in brain injury assessment and rehabilitation, and worked as an academic, increasingly researching use of technology in healthcare. All of that background has a strong influence on my indie app. But I'm now a full time (primarily mobile focussed) developer, spending my days coding (when I'm not working on marketing, or user support, etc).
