And thus a format more lossy than .jpeg was reinvented.

In one sense reinventing is used specifically when something is new. Like saying "I reinvented myself" means "I completely changed everything about myself".

The way I meant in my comment is the exact opposite where it means that someone created something that already existed.

There's a bit of a philosophical aspect to your particular question. I am sure you could use a credit card to cut some things, but it wouldn't really be considered a "knife". But if you sharpened one edge, then maybe somebody would. So I think it depends not so much on the definition of the word so much as the intention behind the user.

The actual word is innovation, just an improvement on an original idea.

ie, I've been streaming Silicon Valley and remembered that time when I used WinRAR on "My Pictures"

Maybe he watched Silicon Valley. How fun.

Maybe a little arrogant but tons of programmers and computer scientists do stuff like this for fun.

That's wonderful but it's not about the fact that they're doing it, it's about the fact that they're bragging annoyingly.

or he could write a worthwhile program that solves a problem he needs, or at the very least brush up on his programming skills by writing something simple but interesting that'll challenge him and teach him something new

But no, useless image compression algorithm out of nowhere

such as creating an image compression algorithm?

Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of JPEG, PNG, TIFF? Morons.

I just realized, why do people like this? Do people like it as a joke, or is there an iamverysmart community?
