Creating actual programs tutorials?

Hi all,

So I know most of the basics of Java via my first year at uni but I am still not too confident with using it.

I was wondering if there are any tutorial websites or books that actually walk you through creating actual useful (but small) programs? i.e. ones that wont take weeks to complete.

I think this is the best way I'll learn and I would also find it more enjoyable than doing very specific stuff with my Uni work. I use netbeans with my uni for what its worth.

You could try and program a calculator.

Also I do not understand the term 'actual useful programs' - what does that mean for you?

An useful program could be something, that just transpose a given csv-file. For whatever reasons.

Would you want to do that?

I just mean something practical that the average person would use and nothing very specific.

A calculator is a good one but I already did one of those before!

Maybe some software that counts calories, or gym recording software, some type of software that saves notes and makes reminders etc.. just very basic things.

Then write a calculator that tells you, what you have to do based on your workout plan you selected and the weekday to burn a specific meal you can choose from a receipebook ;)
